Hi Peggy, At 07:26 PM 4/20/99 EDT, PegSpeed@aol.com wrote: >Can someone guide me? Is there an online map of Licking County showing range >numbers and townships? It was divided into townships that are 5 miles by 5 miles, instead of the more usual 6 x 6 miles. This site talks about that, and at the bottom shows a map with the range numbers across the top in Roman numerals from X to XV going from east to west and the township numbers inside the townships (1 to 4) from south to north. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohfrankl/Land/ohl3.html#USMD The very bottom of the county (below the notch in the south-east corner) had been part of the Refugee Tract. Here the township and ranges are numbered from a different set of baseline and principal meridian than for the rest of the county. See: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohfrankl/Land/ohl2.html#OCP and scroll down to the map. The range numbers for the these lower townships go from XVI to XX going from east to west. As you can see from the map, the township numbers go from south to north, but by the time they get to Licking co. they are not the same depending which range you are in. There is a map in N. N. Hill's _History of Licking County..._, 1881, that is a little clearer. It looks as if the township numbers in that very bottom area vary between 16 and 18. This site shows the various base-lines and principal meridians used across the US. As you can see, Ohio is quite a hodge-podge. http://www.ca.blm.gov/cadastral/meridian.html Click on Ohio to get a more detailed view. This site shows how townships are designated in reference to the base lines and principal meridians. http://www.frontiernet.net/~lewerer/helper_area/township.html But note that most of Licking Co. has townships that are 5 miles on a side and divided into 4 larger sections of 4000 acres each rather than the usual 6 miles on a side with 36 sections of 640 acres each. Thanks to everyone who responded. I got six responses as of now. It is always hard to know how popular some of these lists are. I have been on a Somerville mailing list for several years and there is a message or two every couple of months. Then I was on the Allegheny County (PA) list and got so many messages each day I had to unsubscribe. I'm glad to meet you all and I thank you for the geography and for the suggestions.. I will try the Johnstown and Licking County Genealogical Societies for possible obits. -- John Middleton, Leawood, Kansas Middleton, SCT>Liverpool, Eng>Chicago, IL, 1800-1920; Neely, IRL>PA, 1759-1900; Chid(d)ester, WV>OH, 1800-1900; Som(m)erville, Grasmere, Eng, 1700-1850 Web Page: http://www.planetkc.com/jmcpa -- Unbuttoned Press - Genealogy Publishing
I am new to this list. I have just discovered that some of my ancestors lived in Croton, Ohio. But I am not sure where that is as the maps are not much help. I believe that he may be buried there as well. Name: Thomas George Chidester. Died June 1904. He was on the 1890 Civil War Vets Special Schedule living in Croton. Still looking for anyone that might have information on Christina Jackson who married Landon Tavenner In Loudoun Co, Virginia on August 21, 1823. They moved to Newark, Licking Co, Ohio possibly in the 1840's along with other members of the Tavener/Tavenner family. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to determine who Christina's parents were, death dates and any children's names. Thanks, Cheryl Jackson Malone

Have done much research on Jacob Poundstone in Licking County. would like to compare data with any interested descendants. Jacob Poundstone was the son of Philip Poundstone and Anna Kreager, was born in Fayette Co., Penn. in 1812. Jacob married Rhoda Jolliffe in 1833 in Fayette Co. This line however, moved to Licking Co, Ohio in 1833. Jacob and Rhoda Poundstone had only daughters, all born between 1833 and 1845 in Licking Co., Ohio. There were Mary Ann (md. to Levi Ferguson,) Elizabeth (md. John Hoagland,) Angeline (md. David Norman,) Maria Rebecca (md. an unknown Smith and moved to Indiana,) Sarah (md. George Hampton,) and Margery Poundstone (md. second James Thompson.) Is anyone researching this part of the family? Thank you, Kathleen Rizer

Kirk Waiting is difficult. I know I always want the answers TODAY. I have checked the Licking County resources that I have. There are no Skidmores buried in Hopewell Township's Poplar Hill Cemetery. There is no Skdimore marriage listed in Licking County, Ohio Marriages 1808-1975. The other books I have are from an era too early. Wish I could have found something. Priscilla
I am working on the Isaac NORMAN family which lived in Licking Co Ohio from the early 1800's until the mid 1850's when they moved to Illinois. His son, Edmun, married Amy BRIGHT. In 1933, in my grandfathers obituary, a daughter named May SKIDMORE was mentioned. The paper said she lived in Newark, Ohio. I know that she had at least one son, Norman SKIDMORE. May was born in Nottingham, England, in 1882, as May SIMMINS. I have checked the online cemetery listings and death records for Licking County, but I find no record of her or Norman. I have called all eleven Norman Skidmores found in the online people search and none are the right one. The 1910 census has May in Philadelphia, living alone, and not yet married. I have ordered the 1920 soundex for Ohio from a local FHC, but I am told there will be a delay. I would appreciate it if someone could suggest a way for me to look further in Licking county while I am waiting on the Soundex. Thanks, Kirk Simmins Little Rock ksimmins@earthlink.net
