    2. Am looking for information on death or burial of Abraham Whipple in Granville, Licking Co. between 1835 and 1840. He is listed in the 1820 and 1830 census, but have not seen original documents, and would also like to know if children other than my Manley (b. 1814) are listed. Wife was Parthina (Parthena) maiden name unknown. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Jan Worthington Rowe

    1. LDS info re: ROOT/ROOTE
    2. Ron & Patricia Donnell
    3. Arlene, The info on the LDS site does reference the sources -- "Film Number: 457734"; "Batch number: 9006702 / Sheet: 28"; and "Batch number: F610302 / Sheet: 29". Your nearest LDS Family History Center should be able to help you locate the source material that is reflected in the IGI (International Genealogical Index) data reflected on the web site. In addition, the Ancestral File referenced, AFN: 8VJG-XG, may provide valuable additional data. In fact, if you click on the "Details" tab on http://familysearch.org/Search/af/ancestral_file_frame.asp?recid=7196848, you will see the name and address of the person who submitted the File. And the "Family" and "Pedigree" tabs give additional information that should be helpful. To locate the nearest Family History Center, see http://www.lds.org/en/2_How_Do_I_Begin/4_Where_is.html . Each Center is staffed by helpful volunteers, and while you cannot expect them to do your research, I have found that they are always willing and eager to help you make use of the resources available at each Center, or on loan from Salt Lake City. By the way, even if there had been no fire to destroy the records, it is unlikely civil records would exist for a birth as early as 1818. Most likely the IGI and Ancestral File data have come from other sources such as church records. 1. Thomas George Chidester
    2. jmcpa
    3. Just an update for all those people who helped me with the location of Croton. I found it, Thanks very much. I also located Thomas George Chidester on the 1900 Census. He was in Hartford Village, which seems to be Croton with the name changed. I tried the 1880 census but the index for C320 to C350 is messed up and it appears that much of it is missing. I looked in Hartford Village but he was not there. I didn't have the time to start through the rest of the names. If anyone has a half way decent 1880 Ohio census index, I would like to know if he shows up. I did find some interesting stuff on a Licking County web page. A listing of births showed George Thomas' son Herbert Edward and a listing for that son's daughter, Bertha Ellen Chidester. It even had her married name, Marriott, so she must have put the information in the county records at some later time. (I found a Herbert Marriott living in Thornville and sent him a letter. I will be interested to see if he responds.) 2. Linda Fredrickson
    3. For Arlene on the ROOT Family--Licking Co. Transcribed Marriage Book, page 111, has Noble ROOT married to Harriet BUSHNELL on 22 Feb 1821. Perhaps she is the one who helped raise the children. Also there is a Harriet ROOT married to E. M. GUSEY on 9 Jun 1840. Page 112 has Alanson ROOT md. to Phebe WILLIAMS on 29 Mar 1827. Alanson ROOT and a William S. RICHARDS were Administrators to the estate of Noble ROOT when he died in 1831. Perhaps this will help in some way. Regards, Linda

    1. Root/Roote family in Licking County
    2. Arlene Boulette
    3. I have recently found my ggg-grandmother in the new LDS Familysearch site--someone I thought I would never find. The information (undocumented) that is given is that Amanda Root was born September 28, 1818, in Granville, Licking Co., to Noble Root and Damaris Barrett Root. I have explored the Licking County web site and see that there was a court house fire in 1875. I'm hoping some of you experienced in researching in Licking County can help. Is there any other source out there for proving that Amanda is their daughter? Her mother died before Amanda was 2 and there were numerous older brothers and sisters. Perhaps she (and other children) were raised by someone other than the father. Prior to finding this information my only information on Amanda was a marriage record from Preble County for her and John Melville Crabb on May 17, 1838. He was a Presbyterian minister and they lived in Williams County. Amanda died Jan. 1, 1848. The information given in the ancestral file on the Familysearch site says John Middleton Crabb, which is incorrect. There was a John Middleton Crabb in the family, but he was not the minister. When exploring the Licking county web pages, I did find cemetery records documenting death and burials for several members of the Root family, but Amanda was buried in a little country church graveyard in Williams county. Any help or suggestions on where to look next would be most welcome. Thank you in advance. Arlene

    1. Wheelhouse
    2. William W Barton
    3. Hi Margie: Regarding your request for info on a WHEELHOUSE family in Licking Co: A Robert & Hannah Wheelhouse emigrated from Yorkshire, England, to Licking Co. ca. 1818. I know they had a daughter Elizabeth (Betsy) born 19 Jan. 1815 in Colne, Heptonstall, Yorkshire, married ISAAC KENNEDY 3 Oct. 1833, died 16 July 1904 in Woodstock Twp., Schuyler Co., IL. Elizabeth had at least one brother. He was named John. He was in Licking Co. at the time of the 1840 census. Perhaps your Victoria Wheelhouse was a daughter of John or another brother. Have you tried the Licking Co. 1850 census? Maybe Victoria and her parents didn't depart Licking Co. until after that census was taken. Good luck with your research. 1. Solomon Levingston
    2. Linda Fredrickson
    3. Mary, Have you tried the censuses for 1850 and 1860? In 1860 Solomon was living in Perry Township (p.88) with George, Anthony, Solomon, Henry, and Harriet, and next door to Rolla Levingston and his family (a brother, perhaps?) Ruth was not listed. I just checked the 1870 Index I have, and Solomon is not listed. The Marriage Book has a gap in the records from 1829 to 1839. From the age of son George in 1860 (25), I would guess that Solomon and Ruth were married during this gap. Linda

Must be Licking County. When she was 4 yrs. old she moved with her folks in a covered wagon to Polk City, Iowa. She was my husband's great grandmother, having married George E. Steward in 1867.
