My lib has a number of histories of Licking Co., including HIlls. I had said I would be willing to do look ups once a week, but I should explain what Hill's is. The books as well as the other Bristers, was written in the late 1880-90s. It contains the history of the twps, churches, schools, etc. It has long & short bios of people living in the area. But ONLY those living during that time period. If your ancestors left the county before 1880 and left no family behind they are not listed. I suspect the bios were put in by family much like the histories put out today, so not all are listed. as I said I can do look ups for anyone as I am at the library once a week and will collect the requests and check at one time. I may be slow in getting back to anyone but I'll get them, if you haven't heard from me in several weeks contact me to let me know I may have over looked you. Some are several vols., one alone has over 700 pages, very difficult to make photos, so keep it easy folks. Barbara

Really need help with Eli Clark, born Feb. 22, 1814 in Hopewell, Frederick Co., Va. to Benjamin and Mary Clark. Very much hoping he is a dead end branch on some fellow researcher's tree. If you don't have Eli, how about Benjamin? Eli came to Ohio and at 21 married an Ohio girl, and spent his life in Coshocton and Licking Counties. Much descendant info available. Searching for information on a Julia Boyer born about 1828. Had a son Charles Boyer born 1857; he died 1872 and is buried in Hanover Cemetery. Julia was married to Eli Clark b. summer 1814 sometime in the 1860's, but the marriage is not found in Licking County. They were in Hanover Twp. in 1870 and 1880 censuses, then Julia died in 1881 and Eli in 1887. Burial sites have not been found in Licking Co. or Pike Twp. Coshocton Co. where Eli previously lived. It is not known if Julia was an unmarried mother or a divorced or widowed mother. She and Charles did not appear in Hanover or surrounds in 1860 before marriage to Eli Clark. In 1880 Eli is shown as a Grocerer, and they owned at least 2 properties in Hanover (Fleming) Village. He died in Fallsbury Twp., where he had a son and grown grandchildren. If anyone on this list has Boyer info which includes Julia and Charles, or information about a Clark Grocery in Hanover or any other related clues, it would be much appreciated. Carolyn (Anderson) Clark
I am trying to learn about any Schick families in Newark, Licking Co, OH in the mid-1800s. I had a 3rd great grandfather Conrad Schick who left Baden, Germany and arrived in New York about 1854 with 4 or 5 of his children. Some of them went to OH and Conrad and several others went on to Tippecanoe Co., IN. In Indiana were George, Benedict and Conrad Jr. However, when Conrad Sr. died in 1887 it was stated in his obituary that he was survived by two sons in Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co., IN..... AND a son and daughter in Newark, OH. It is the two in OH that I would like to discover. I have no idea what their names were or if they stayed in Newark but they were there in 1887. If anyone is working on a Schick/Shick line in Licking Co., OH around the Newark area I would sure like to share information. Paula lurena@psyber.com
Don If it is not to much trouble could you see if there is a Shaw or Barclay family mentioned in the book. Thank you, Debbie
Listmembers, There were many Evans Families in early Licking History. I'm posting to the list (and therefore the archives) data from several sources that I've compiled the last few weeks. My own ancestors are Joshua Evans and his widowed mother Rhoda Evans of Perry Twp below. Joshua had 5 brothers and 2 sisters. William of Perry Twp is a known brother, and I suspect that Lewis of Perry is another. Joshua married Elizabeth Radcliff/Ratcliff, and William married her sister Mary Radcliff/Ratcliff. Deborah Radcliff/Ratcliff married one of the many John Evans men in the county. I would sure like to hear from anyone related to this family or any other Evans reseachers. Does anyone have any information on any HAGERTY/HAGGERTY's living in Licking County during the 1860s? Ron Smith
OHLICKIN-L@rootsweb.com jrs@cyberback.com Hi! Ive just traced my family to Licking County, Ohio and am interested in corresponding with anyone with an interest in these related families. George Swain married Christena Bodle in Licking County September 23, 1827. In the 1830s this family is in Madison Co. Indiana. William Pittsford from Licking Co.is also in Madison. Pittsfords wife, Elizabeth Bodle,(married Licking Co. 3/24/1822) is a sister to Christena. There are other Bodles and Swains in Madison but am unaware of a connection. George Swain died in 1840s and Christena remarried to John Pugh before 1850. I need to find parents or relatives of George Swain and Christena Bodle. Thanks for any help. Im also interested in knowing how much additional information (other names & locations) is contained in these Licking Co. marriage records. Robert Swain ps. There was a James Swain who married Sarah Losh on Nov. 30, 1826 in Licking Co. George Swains first son was named James Francis Swain ... any connection?
Our Library has copies, I haven't looked in it for sometime, I'm assuming its still there. If it is there, and you want something let me know. Its under reference so I have to check only when I go, at least three times a month. If any one can help me I'd appreciate it. If the name Hayman from Licking means anything let me know. Barbara
Here's the contents of the title page of the copy that's available in the reference section of the LDS Family History Center in Mesa, AZ: 1798. ------- HISTORY -OF- LICKING COUNTY, O. ITS PAST AND PRESENT, -CONTAINING- CONDENSED, COMPREHENSIVE HISTORY OF OHIO, INCLUDING AN OUTLINE HISTORY OF THE NORTH- WEST; A CONPLETE [sic] HISTORY OF LICKING COUNTY; ITS TOWNSHIPS, CITIES, TOWNS, VILLAGES, SCHOOLS, CHURCHES, SOCIETIES, INDUSTRIES, STATISTICS, ETC.; A HISTORY OF ITS SOLDIERS IN THE LATE WAR; PORTRAITS OF ITS EARLY SETTLERS AND PROMINENT MEN; A CHAPTER ON NOTED PIONEERS; VIEWS OF ITS FINEST BUILDINGS AND VARIOUS HISTORIC AND INTEREST- ING LOCALITIES--SUCH AS THE "OLD FORT," ETC.; MISCELLANEOUS MATTER; MAP OF THE COUNTY; BIOGRAPHIES AND HISTORIES OF PIONEERR [sic] FAMILIES, ETC., --------------------------- COMPILED BY N. N. HILL, JR. --------------------------- ILLUSTRATED. NEWARK, OHIO: A. A. GRAHAM & Co., PUBLISHERS. 1881. I first ran across this book a few years ago; my g-g-grandfather Thomas THOMAS appears in a short paragraph outlining his service in Company H, Seventy-sixth Ohio volunteer infantry from 1864 until his death in the explosion of the steamer "Sultana" on the Mississippi River. Here are some excerpts from Hill's narrative on page 505: The cabins of Hughes and Ratliff were erected on the Bowling Green prairie, between Montour's Point and the Licking creek, about half a mile above Bowling Green run. These two families, consisting of twenty-one persons, were the only white inhabitants of this township and the county until 1800. In the spring of this year Benjamin Green and Richard Pitzer arrived, and shortly after, John Van Buskirk. In September, Isaac Stadden and family arrived, and, in September, Captain Samuel Elliott came, making the seventh family within the limits of the township. Obviously between 1800 and 1881, so many people arrived in the county that Hill could not enumerate all of them. But among other things, Hill outlines the early history of the churches of the area, and this material in particular may assist researchers who need to figure out the names of the churches whose records may be pertinent to their searches. The site of the Ohio Historical Society, http://www.ohiohistory.org/ar_tools.html, indexes the book as part of its Online Collection Catalog. It will probably be a few weeks before I can get back down to Mesa to consult the book again. BTW, a web search for this book today (May 5, 1999) turned up the following site: http://www.higginsonbooks.com/nctook.htm (not an endorsement). Ron Donnell Cave Creek, AZ
Add my name to the list of those who have never heard of this book. From Ron's post, at least one LDS Library has a copy of it. There may also be an index somewhere, as the original inquiry on this subject was from someone who knew their ancestors appeared on certain pages of the book. Anyway, I was prompted to check the Ohio Historical Society website. They have a list of histories of Licking County, including Hill's, at: www.ohiohistory.org/webpac-bin/wgbroker The main website is simply: www.ohiohistory.org/ I'm not sure, but you may be able to find a researcher through the site who would search any one of these histories. If, by any chance, there IS someone in this group who has access to Hill's, and if they are willing to do look-ups, my Licking County ancestors were: Bess, Carr, McDaniel
