    1. Rian,Hisey
    2. I have rason to believe that my Rian family originated from Licking Co.,Ohio. I have been unable to find anything about them other than Jacob Rian marrried Sarah Hisey. This would have been in the mid 1800s. I believe Sarah Hisey was the daughter of Johnathan Hisey and Sarah Smoots. I would appreciate any information you may have on any of these families, especially the Rian family. Family lore says that the spelling of the name was changed due to a family argument but I have nothing to verify this. Thanks, AnNMe@aol.com

    1. WEIGEL, LEGGE, VOELKER, Columbus, Pataskala, Outville
    2. Donald Weigel
    3. I'm looking for information on Pataskala, Licking Co. OH cemeteries and on Outville OH. Henry Weigel of Ohio is a mysterious brother or half brother to my grandfather Charles Bernard Weigel of Baltimore. Charles Bernard Weigel of Ohio is the son of Henry. Husband: Henry William Weigel Born: 17 December 1847 Place: At Sea on the Atlantic Ocean Chr.: Place: Marr.: Place: Died: 11 April 1924 Place: 220 Sycamore, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio Bur.: 13 April 1924 Place:Pataskala, Licking Co. OH by Denton Donaldson & Hughes 318 E. Town St., Colm., OH Father: John Weigel Mother: Gretchin ---?--- Wife: Amanda Legge Born: Place: Chr.: Place: Died: d. bfr. 7 July i908 (prob in 1908) Place: Bur.: Place: Father: Mother: Child: 1 Male Name: Charles Bernard (Benjamin) Spouse: Mae ---?--- Born: 16 October 1873 Place: Outville, Ohio Chr.: Place: Marr.: Place: Died: 24 April 1933 Place: 1086 Fair Avenue, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio Bur.: 2 May 1933 Place:Pataskala, Licking Co. OH by Denton & Donaldson 318 E. Town St., Columbus, OH Henry Weigel is a bit of a mystery for me. I have a number of letters from him in Ohio and later from his son Charles Bernard (Benjamin) Weigel. The letters are addressed to my Grandfather Charles Bernard Weigel with the salutation Dear Brother. The father John Weigel who I believe was with Gretchin in 1847 on the Atlantic crossing, must have returned to Germany as he had a second son Christian Weigel b. 11 October 1850 in Kuhr- hessen,34626 Neukirchen. Kriev-Ziegenhaim. John Weigel returned to the US in 1857 with a wife, Margaret Durkel. I do not believe Margaret and Gretchin are the same person. The son Christian did not accompany them. They settled in Baltimore this time and had a daughter Barbara in 1858 (she died young and only appears in one census). My grandfather, Charles Bernard Weigel was born 3 October 1861 in Baltimore, MD. Christian came from Germany to join the family after 1870. Henry never shows up in the census as being in MD. I believe Henry must have been left in Ohio in the care of someone else between 1847 and 1850. My only suspicion at present is a John and Elizabeth Voelker who had a son John and daughter. Elizabeth Voelker was a sister of John Weigel. I have not been able to place the Voelkers in the US although I have their original emigration papers. In any event I believe Henry was raised in Ohio. As shown above both Henry and his son, Charles bernard, lived in Columbus at the time of their deaths but were returned to Pataskala for burial. They were Protestant. I only have Pataskalaas the place of burial and would appreciate any information of Pataskala and cemeteries there. Also information on Outville where Charles Bernard was born. Charles Bernard Weigel was an insurance agent with an office at 1101 N High Street in Columbus when he died.

    3. The 1820 census listed a Benjamin REDDEN in Licking Co. Does anyone know anything about this family? 1. Roberts in Licking Co, OH
    2. Rex
    3. Does anyone have access to the 1830 and 1840 census? Looking for Roberts in Licking Co., OH. I am working from a census index, but am pretty sure that my ggggrandfather, Luther J Roberts m Phoebe Jaeger are on the 1830 census in Newton Twp. There is a Charles Roberts listed in the same township also who may be related - know nothing about this Charles, but the name Charles does show up in my line. This line has a bad habit of having many children, only one of which survive - doesn't leave me with a lot of cousins or related families to work with. :-) There are a couple of other Roberts listed in St Albans township also. Luther Roberts shows up again on the 1840 census in Bennington Twp under the name L J Roberts. There are still Roberts families in Newton twp. After that, Luther turns up in Cedar Co., Iowa 1850 and it looks like the whole family disappears - my gggrandfather, John Roberts m Malinda Brooks made it to Oregon and the rest of the family disappears - may have also tried to go to Oregon and died along the Oregon Trail. Any information, clues, hunches greatly appreciated. This has been my brick wall for a long time - supposedly a professional genealogist worked this line and the trail ended at Luther J Roberts - I think there are clues left in Ohio. Thanking one and all in advance, Teri

    1. RE: The Advocate
    2. Dawe, Timothy J.
    3. The Ohio Historical Society has back issues of the Newark Advocate, as well as many other early Ohio newspapers, on microfilm rolls. I checked the OHS website (http://dbs.ohiohistory.org/newspaper/home.cfm) and it appears that their coverage for the Advocate begins on 1/9/1822 and ends on 12/31/1981, although there appeared to be gaps. The OHS site gives instructions on how to order these microfilm rolls through interlibrary loan ($3.00 per roll for 30 days of viewing), and which roll numbers correspond to each range of dates. Hope this helps--good luck! 1. refugees: OH > Canada
    2. Jeanne Crews
    3. Good morning! I received this yesterday. I hope it helps someone find some missing relatives. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FAMILY TREE FINDERS Tuesday - 21 September 1999 Canadian Refugee and Volunteer Warrants Perhaps overlooked by researchers are the refugee warrants for those Canadians that offered assistance to the American colonies during the American Revolution. Many of these Canadians may have been able to trace their own connection back to those colonies. In fact those living in the New England colonies had begun to migrate northerly in the hopes of acquiring more land. This was because the Proclamation of 1763 prevented them from moving westward past the Appalachian Mountains. After the American Revolution, land was a major commodity that the newly formed U.S. Government used as a repayment for a variety of services offered by soldiers and others who helped win the war. Land for the Canadian Refugee Warrants was set aside in the Ohio River Survey in Ranges 16 through 22. These ranges were divided into half-sections. Those who received this land were primarily from Nova Scotia and Quebec, however, if your had ancestors in New Brunswick, you will want to investigate these warrants, as New Brunswick was created out of Nova Scotia. The present day counties included in these ranges encompasses part of Fairfield, Franklin, Licking, and Perry counties. The lots were drawn in a lottery style. Like others who received land warrants in Ohio, some of those who received refugee warrants sold them to land speculators. One of the most informative papers included in these land warrant files is the Powers of attorney. These often indicate the residence of the claimant offering you a clue to where they were residing in the 1800s. The Volunteer Warrants were offered for volunteer service during the War of 1812. Those entitled to these warrants were living primarily in Genessee and Nigara counties in New York. The land for these warrants was located in the Vincennes Land District in Indiana Territory. Like the refugees warrants, are likely to include a power of attorney. However, these files also include correspondence, the tract location, the county of residence in New York when the warrant was issued. Also included in the file will be information as to the rank, and regiment of the volunteer. The records for both the refugee and volunteer warrants are located at the National Archives in Washington, DC. An index of the Canadian refugee warrants can be found in Clifford Neal Smith's "Federal Land Series, Volume One" which can be found at many libraries with genealogy sections. Rhonda R.
