I'm not sure what Nola means--if you go to the Web address listed at the bottom of the message, you arrive the society's home page. The circles on the left are links to pages that list publications available from the society, tell how to contact the society and request research, etc. I bookmarked it so I could order publications and write to the society in the future. (These are the advantages to me.) I should change everything in the previous paragraph to past tense, though, because I just tried to go back to the site and it's not up right now. I hope the shut-down is temporary. My grandfather, Adolph Ehlermann, owned the Newark Candy Co. years ago. Does anyone have any information on where it was located? I'm putting together our family tree and history, and I would like any information I can find such as pictures, etc.
Hi Lois, Perhaps I can be of some help. Have you seen the Granville area cemeteries on the web? Go to my home page and check the links: http://www.kinfinder.com. As far as I know there never was an Alexandria Twp. Alexandria village was/is located in St. Albans Twp. Don't be confused by the fact that there is a Maple Grove Cemetery in Alexandria and a different Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville. Have you seen or do you have a copy of "Granville, the Story of an Ohio Village" by William T. Utter? On pp. 78 I found: "Eleazer Clemons, of whom little else is known, had the distinction of being the first villager to manufacture an exportable product. He was as wood turner by trade and in 1807 set up a lathe operated by a small water wheel on Clear Run. He produced wooden plates, porringers, bowls, salt mortars, and similar articles in great variety." Let me know if you have further questions. Hi All, If any of you have any info about my elusive CLEMONS family, I'd surely appreciate it. The 4 CLEMONS boys arrived in what became Granville, OH in early 1800 with their mother, Elizabeth Wilcox Clemons Case and her new husband, Job Case, and several Case children. They traveled with the Scioto Land Company, of which Job Case was a founder, from Granville, MA. They helped settle Granville, OH. The CLEMONS boys were actually born in or near Granby/Old Lyme CT. They were: Eleazar, Henry, Lewis and William. I am a descendant of Lewis' son, William, who married Ellen Rose. (The Rose family also made the trek from MA to OH with the Case family). The last information I have is that "Ellen Clemons was raising her family alone in nearby Alexandria Twp." Any descendants out there? Can someone tell me if Alexandria Twp is part of Licking County? Regards, Lois (LoieRinNJ@aol.com)
Yes, thankfully, you guys are always there for us! Unfortunately we don't thank you often enough, so here it is...A very heartfelt thank you to all those wonderful volunteers in Licking County and other areas who keep the info flowing for the rest of us! Regards, Lois
Does anyone have information on John and Margaret (BOWERS) CROSS? John and Margaret were probably born in the 1790's (New York?). Their children, Lydia, John, and Peter were apparently born in Licking Co (all between abt. 1812-1818). Peter later relocated to Logan Co., where he married Susannah WHITE in 1834. They moved to Hardin Co. 1860-1870, and were profiled in "Biographical Sketches" (for Hardin Co.) in the latter 1800's. In the sketch, it was said that Peter's parents, John & Margaret (Bowers) CROSS, were "pioneers of Licking Co.", and that John(Sr.) died there at the age of 68. Any help would be most appreciated. Tom Osborn Calif.
'Thank you' Margaret Calvin, for telling it like it is! Perhaps some of us forget or don't even stop to realize the struggle & years of hard work that researchers & volunteers have done & who continue to contribute in this new new age of the internet. Please accept my very humble 'thanks', Margaret, & to those like you. Right now, I can name one researcher for Licking Co. who has helped me in more ways then he may realize and certainly deserves some recognition: Erik P. Conard. Let's be thankful, folks, Sandy
Listen, I haven't helped much in Licking county, but from experience I KNOW what it takes - physical, mental, money and yes, emotion. There is always a small group who do the major part of the work. I Know - been there, done that, as they say. In addition, all the books in the library had to be bar coded before the move to Newark Public Library, and the physical exercise of actually moving the library is tremendous. I was involved in moving the Putnam County library. Took a year to recouperate! Let's ask what we can do to help - not knock the few who are trying to help those who live outside the county. ANY county as far as that goes. Love to all and cheers for the Licking county people. Margaret Calvin.
Nola, It may not be important to you but some people do not know where the Society can be found and also would like to purchase some of the publications they offer. I know the site is not as jam packed with information and links like some others, but this stuff costs money and most genealogy societies do not have a lot to throw around. The important thing is knowing how to get there so that you can look over their wealth of information. They operate on the donations from people utilizing their resources so I can't blame them for not giving it away. These people have been extremely helpful to me and countless other genealogists so please cut them some slack. better yet, offer your time to make their web site better. I have to agree with Nola regarding the lack of information. In fact, the address doesn't seem to be correct for the library either. It is my understanding that the new Newark Public Library has opened now. It seems to be a site for the "Members Only". Do you provide any information for people who are unable to physically come to Newark? It certainly does not appear as though the Licking County Genealogical Society's Computer Interest Group does anything but be interested in computers. I am truly frustrated because this is my "home" county and I would expect more from it. In fact, I have even posted a cemetery transcription to the Licking County GenWeb page and I live in Michigan. What is the problem with this group? Hi, I am researching the family of Isaac Farmer of Hopewell Township. He is my 6th greatgrandfather. We are unable to find the name of his father. Isaac's mother Jane Farmer died in 1827 and is buried in Barnes Cemetery as are Isaac, his wife and some other Farmers. Isaac was born in Mass 01/25/1780 and Married Mary Perry in 1803 somewhere in OH. She was found as a head of household in 1820 census. If anyone is researching this family please let me know. I also have a family bible belonging to Samuel Farmer son of Isaac and Mary with a listing of birthdates of all his siblings there were 13. I am interested in any information regarding this family. Thanks Crystal

Hello I'm looking for information on Peter Swick b ca 1812 and his wife Rebecca Simpson 1806-1886. They were probably married in Licking Co ca 1836 and moved to Allen Co later. Peter Swick's father may have been Peter also. He may have had brothers Solomon and David. I don't know anything about Rebecca Simpson except she may have been born in Licking County. Thanks Paula Crafton
Seeking info on James CHAMBERS, b. abt 1790, unknown place. His daughter, S/Charlotte Chambers, m. Isaac MOORE Jr. on 9/3/1835, unknown place. I have reason to believe that these families were from Ohio (perhaps Licking Co) from some very old family letters (1826-1868) written by Isaac MOORE Sr. to Isaac Jr. and C/Sharlotte CHAMBERS MOORE. In one letter there is also a reference to Samuel CHAMBERS, perhaps a brother of S/Charlotte. Isaac MOORE Jr. and S/Charlotte CHAMBERS had several children: Sarah Jane (m. Thomas Hall BOUSMAN), George Washington, Allen, Wilbert, Samuel, James Riley (killed in Civil War) and Martha (m. Edward BLAIR). Any info on any of these folks would be greatly appreciated, will share my research. Thanks. Lois in CA
I am looking for information about a John MORRISON, who lived in Licking Co. in the mid-1800s--probably between 1830 and 1880--and who owned land in Knox Co. He came originally from PA. I realize that is vague but is all I have.
