    1. [OHLICKIN] County History
    2. Tom
    3. Would any of you Licking Co. researchers happen to have a copy of one of the early (latter 1800's) county histories? I am hoping to find some clues about JOHN CROSS & MARGARET BOWERS, who were said to have been "pioneers" of the county. I have uncovered incorrect data at FamilySearch (in Ancestral File) implying that John was the son of Rueben and Esther (MILES) CROSS of NY. Rueben's Rev. War pension file gives much genealogical data, and clearly locates his son in NY state. The John CROSS of Licking Co. (early 1800's Censuses) was of a significantly different age than the NY John. I do not know how the original submitter to Ancestral File confused the two Johns, although "John Cross" is one of those all-too-common names. Arrgh! The harder I look, the more my "tree" unravels. Be extremely cautious with data from FamilySearch. The more time I spend there, the more obvious conflicts I find. I suspect there are a great many corrupted family trees floating around. Good luck to all, Tom Osborn Calif.

    1. [OHLICKIN] OH Lands booklet
    2. For those wanting to print out the auditor's booklet on Ohio lands: Go to http://www.history.rootsweb.com/~ohio-lands/ and you will find Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman's site about Ohio lands. She has a whole mailing list on Ohio lands (I'm not on it) that you can join if you want AND she has placed the auditor's booklet on her site where it can be more easily printed out. It says at the site that you can order a hard copy of the booklet via email now. Send a request to Abigail Slanker at aaslanker@auditor.state.oh.us. Or if you prefer to do it by snail mail, send your request to: Auditor of State, 88 East Broad Street, P.O. Box 1140, Columbus, Ohio 43266-0040. Herma

    1. [OHLICKIN] Neighbarger/Griffith/Priest
    2. Busch
    3. I'm trying to solve a puzzle involving these surnames. My gg-grandmother, Irena Margaret NEIGHBARGER, was married to James GRIFFITH by 1850. They didn't have any children in the 1850 Licking census. By the time of the 1860 census, Irena was married to my gg-grandfather, Valentine SPAWR, and living in Kansas. They had daughters born in 1858 and 1859 but there was no evidence of older children. I learned from an LDS Ancestral File that Irena and James GRIFFITH had two children, Amanda, born about 1850, and James, born about 1852. I assumed that Irena's husband and children (GRIFFITH) had all died before she married my gg-grandfather (SPAWR). However, when I made contact with another descendant of Irena not long ago, he said that his grandmother mentioned two step-children. I started looking for Amanda and James GRIFFITH again. I just found in my "possible relatives" file a message I received from Gloria (GALBINAK) a year ago about the 1860 Licking Co. census. She found an Amanda NEIBARGER, age 9, in the household of Sanford and Tabitha PRIEST. I know that several NEIGHBARGERS married PRIESTS. Now I think that it's very possible that Irena's daughter Amanda was raised by relatives after Irena's marriage to James GRIFFITH ended and Irena moved to Illinois and then Kansas with my gg-grandfather. If it is the same Amanda, her last name was changed to Irena's maiden name, NEIBARGER/NEIGHBARGER. This is a long and complicated story, and I may not be telling it very well, but I'm hoping someone will look at it and come up with something new. 3. This booklet is free from the Auditor. Most genealogy seminars in Ohio have these (and if they don't their chairmen need to do it). I have most of the issues for the past few years. It changes some, and especially with the new auditor. I keep all of my old copies as the material changes. M. Calvin.

    3. I have a copy of the 'Ohio Lands" book and it is a great resource! Inside the front cover it says "For free distribution only" so I would assume you could also write to the State Auditor's office if you are having trouble downloading it. Great booklet to have! Karen

    3. At the following URL you can download a booklet called "Ohio Lands" which is very informative for the genealogist, if you had ancestors that settled in Ohio. At a seminar I attended Friday (as a township clerk) I was able to pick one up and immediately knew I needed to share. Beware though that this booklet is 70 pages, in 1/2 page size, so it is going to take a little while to download in PDF; however, it is worth it in my humble(?) opinion! After you reach the above, choose "publication" on the left, then the booklet is shown at the bottom of the next page. Carolyn Anderson Clark from central Ohio http://www.auditor.state.oh.us/

    3. I've been sitting back and reading these messages about the Licking Co. Genealogical Society. But, I can't do that any longer. First, at least they are trying to help us. If they don't have what you expect, have you tried asking for that info? Second, do YOU have a page set up that is just for Licking County? It behooves us to appreciate ALL data that might help us. I get disappointed on a daily basis at different sites. That doesn't mean I think they're awful, I just try another day or go somewhere else. If they continue to get critisims, they might take the whole site down and then those who have gotten something from it will be in a world of hurt. Please stop the snide remarks and let's get on with genealogy. Thank you. :)) Lois in CA
