Hello Jamie, Gratiot is actually in both counties, on the line between them. Poplar Fork Cemetery, however, is in Licking County. There is a Charles A. Davis buried there (1869-1950), but that is all there is about him in the cemetery index. Perhaps someone else would have more information. There is also an Adda M. Davis (1872-1942). The cemetery is along County Highway 339, also called Poplar Forks Road, just inside the Licking County line. The road runs north/south. I'm sorry, but Elias Hughes did not found Newark. He is, however, credited with being one of the first white settlers in Licking County along with John Ratliff and both their families. They arrived in 1798 and settled in an area that came to be known as "the Bowling Green," which is about 4-5 miles east of the center of present day Newark. Newark was founded in 1803 by William C. Schenck, who also laid out Toledo and Franklin, Ohio. By the way, there was another Elias Hughes, b. 1830 in Pennsylvania, who settled near Granville to the west side of Newark in 1863. All this is in Hill's History of Licking County, which is online at http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Licking/LickingIndex.htm Dan Fleming Reference Librarian Newark Public Library System Newark, Ohio -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Monday, March 07, 2005 7:36 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [OHLICKIN] Re: Elias/Elijah Hughes This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. What I have is a Samuel Weiss, born around 1792 in Luzerne County Ohio, who married an Elizabeth Sims.(born abt. 1804) They moved to Eden Township, Licking County Ohio. I am trying to find his father, who I was told, was a Jacob married to an Elizabeth. I believe this family goes back to another Jacob who belonged to the Moravian Brethren and took the oat of allegiance in Philadelphia county and city in the 1740's. Don't know if I am missing one or two Jacobs between the two Jacobs. Samuel and Sarah Weiss/Wise moved from Luzerne County Pa. in the 1840's. Part of the children were born in Luzerne and the greater part in Licking County Ohio. The children are: Charles Born abt. 1827 William abt. 1828 Ann_______? abt. 1831 Andrew abt. 1835 Elizabeth abt. 1836 George abt. 1838 Sarah abt. 1841 Isaac abt. 1843 Margaret abt. 1845 Emeline abt. 1847 Caroline abt. 1850 I thought there were thirteen children so I may have missed two somewhere. Perhaps Charles was not the eldest. Does anyone connect here? Thanks
