Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/DZB.2ACI/704.1042.1 Message Board Post: I do not have any info on the subjects mentioned of this original posting. But I find the topic interesting and I have a question also. All in my family, that might know are now deceased. I do not know if this is a true story and it has never been verified. A cousin told me a few yrs. ago that our grandmother, Fern Lily McGee Burrier told him that a "Grandmother", he does not remember if it was a grandmother to Fern or a great grandmother. Also has no idea if the "grandmother" was young or old when this reportly was going on. She told him that this "grandmother" helped the runaway slaves at the old Mansion in Trinway, Ohio. That she took them down to a underground room and when it was dark they would go through a tunnel to the river. Fern's parents were David F. McGee (1871-1838) who married Evaline Mathews. His father was also a David McGee who married Lavina Squires (1849-1910) and his father was John McGee who married Sarah Bainter (1819-1861). Sarah's grandfather was a John Cullins (1758-1837). John's father was James McGee who married Honor Dorsey (1794-1844) and her mother was Jemima Gist. I am only tossing these names out here in case someone has any information at all on this topic with my family. Also any information on the family would be appreciated. I was able to contact the present owner of the mansion. He advised that Mr. Adams (I think I am remembering the right name) was a abolitionist so it was possible that the story is true. The owner also remembers that there was a tie with the Adams and Bainter families. Not related family wise though. Adams I think was originally from Va. Squires family also ties into VA at one point. It would be thrilling to verify this family story. Susan Burrier Snyder [email protected]

At the time of her death she had remarried to Maurice H. FLINN. Charles is my great grandfather and I have found him and Mary on the 1870 census in VA. and on the 1880 census in OH with the children, except for my gfather who was born 22 Feb, 1984. Who is N.C.’s parents and siblings? Another unknown is regarding my grandfather James FITZSIMMONS’ business. I know he owned a restaurant on 1st and Canal St., Newark, OH. My father was born upstairs and the building was still standing when I was home this past summer. Originally, I think he was in business with his older brother Albert (same place), Albert died in 1911. This same restaurant was known as FISHER/FLINN RESTAURANT but I don’t know if it was before or after my grandfather owned it. FLINN was a ½ brother. In the Newark, Licking County Directory 1921-22 the business is listed as FITZSIMMONS’ RESTAURANT AND BAR and in the same directory is a listing for the FITZSIMMONS’ UNDERTAKING CO. How can I find out more about these business’? How do I research this from Hawaii? Is there any place I can contact or do I need someone there in Newark? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m just getting started and have much to learn and do. This is my first E-mail to a web, so I hope I am doing this correctly. Thanking you in advance for any help you might give me. Surnames: Husband, Thacker Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DZB.2ACI/2471 Message Board Post: Hi! I'm wondering if it's possible to find an obituary dating from 1886? The one I'm looking for relates to William Husband(s). He died in Washington Township, Licking County on August 19, 1886. The death listing gives cause of death as old age. He was born in Virginia (according to census records) in 1803. He was married to Mary Thacker. By 1870, Mary had died. The two of them had at least three children--Martha, James and Sarah J. William made his living as a carpenter. I'm hoping that the obit might give info on William's specific location of birth or perhaps his parents names. Any help would be appreciated! Robert Schneider Berkeley MO 63134

    2. Below is the URL for marriages published in Adam County, Pennsylvania area papers that mentioned persons from Licking County and/or other Ohio counties. I may have missed some, so you should check for yourself, if you are interested. There were a number of Licking County pioneer names listed such as Koontz, Bell, and Moore. Stephen Ritter purchased most of his land from the Moore family in the 1830's which was located in the Village of St. Lousiville just north of Newark. I have lost track of Stephen Ritter's son Adam Ritter and his daughter, Mary E. Ritter. I believe Mary, most likely, got married and moved from the area. 1. Ann Thorn, Jane Eliza Cane, Newark, schoolgirl samplers research
    2. Hi list; Several years ago I started working as a researcher on a book published in 2002 by Ohio University Press, entitled Ohio Is My Dwelling Place Schoolgirl Samplers 1800-1850 by author Sue Studebaker. We documented a great many samplers, their makers and their teachers and schools. Since the publication of the book we have continued to document these important forms of women's history. We have recently been informed about 2 samplers from Licking County and once again I am on the research trail for information about these girls. One is signed "ANN THORN - born July 11, 1824.....completed sampler in 1839" "NEWARK,OHIO". The second one is signed by "JANE ELIZA CANE (?) ..... marked NEWARK, March 25, 1835". We are considering that the needlework instructress who most likely taught these young girls to stitch was probably Caroline Oliver Seymour, wife of John W. Seymour, both of New England. Mrs Seymour was probably teaching in the Congregationalists "select school' for boys and girls in Newark by 1835 and 2 samplers from Licking County shown in the book resemble closely Caroline Oliver's own sampler made by her at a younger age. Any information will be greatly appreciated. This is our small way of documenting the life and times of women in Ohio in the first half of the 19th century. Sincerely, Jan Thomas Textile Specialist, Historian and Independent Researcher Colorado Springs (I moved right after the book was published) :)
