Author: deborahgarrison52 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.licking/1814.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi It is good to hear from you. I am excited to talk with you. Many of the documents that contain Phylora's name have a different spelling of her name. Is the way you spell it (Phylora) the correct spelling through the family. The census and news article I have all have a different speilling such as Philona and Philora. I have something you may be interested in or you may already have. The following is taken from the Scioto County Biographies-Bloom Township: Warren Holmes, eldest son of Colonel John and Harriet (Stover) Holmes, was born at Bloom Furnace, Scioto City, Jan 16, 1834. He attended the district schools and lived on the homefarm till he grew to manhood. He was married in 1856 to Philora Harper. They have had 6 children, of whom 4 are still living: Benjamin F, John J., Marquis de Lafayette and Orea E. Otto Sennet died at the age of 14 years; Selby died at the age of 14 months. Mr. Holmes and family are members of the Baptist Church, of which he is Deaco! n. His parents were natives of Ohio, and after marriage taught school several years, after which he kept a store and engaged in farming. He was Justice of the Peace for many years and died in 1851. They reared a family of five children, four of whom survive: Lafayette, living in Kansas, George W. is in the Indian Territory, Melissa, wife of Stephen Brown, of Illinois, and Warren. Mrs. Holmes is living with her son, Lafayette. Also I was emailed some information of which I am so grateful for from a woman named Judi B. She said she found the following on the internet: Joseph and Frances (Stover) Harper. Titled "My Ancestors" by Beverly J. Thomas. (as follows) The Harpers and the Stovers are two of the oldest families found in Raleigh County today. The earliest Harper in the part of what is now Raleigh County was John Harper, Jr. father of Joseph Harper, and he was born about 1750 in Maryland. The place of his birth is based on the 1880 Raleigh County census. His daughter, Nancy Harper Stover, reported that her father was born in Maryland and her mother waqs born in South Carolina. The subject of who were the parents of John Harper, Jr. has been one that has been debated among the Harper researchers. I personally believe he was the son of John Harper, Sr. of Monroe County, Virginia, by his first wife who is unknown at this time. John Harper Sr. married for a second time to Jean Logan ! Raeburn. Jean, the second wife of John Harper, Sr. was the daughter of William Logan and the widow of Robert Raeburn. Jean and Robert Raeburn's daughter, Margaraet, married Samuel Sams in 1785 in Augusta County, Virginia, and she was listed on her marriage record as the step-daughter of John Harper. Samuel Sams is listed on the 1810 census for Monroe County and was a witness to the will of John Harper, Sr. found in the court records in Monroe County. Judi B. states that the submitter of the above article did have John Harper Sr. married to Jane Logan which,Judi states, is "a find in itself, as last year no one I was corresponding with knew her last name. John Harper, Jr. was born about 1750 in Maryland. He was married three times. 1st wife-name unknown, 2nd wife-unkownand third marriage to Elizabeth Hailton-this name was found in the family bible and it suspected that it may have really been Hamilton or Hylton. The Bible in in possession of the great-granddaughter of Jane Harper McGee. Joseph Harper was a son from the second marriage of John Harper,Jr. He was born about 1791, died on November 30, 1877, married Frances Stover about 1815, Giles County. Frances "Fannie" Stover, the daughter of Jacob Stover and Sarah "Sallie" (McGhee) Stover. The Children of Joseph and Frances are Jacob Harper, Sarah Harper, Samuel Harper, Hamilton Harper, Elizabeth Harper, Elizabeth Harper, Joseph Harper, Jr., James Harper, Emily Harper, Daniel Harper, George Harper, John Harper, Wesley Harper Maybe you are the one who submitted the above information but if you are not and need more information then I have more about the Stovers and Harpers. I did see quite a few Holmes on the Ohio census. Thank you again for your information and if you would not mind, if Phylora the proper spelling of our ancestor's name? He has purportedly a physician and was called in to help Victoria when she had been ill for years and was close to dying. She was being paraded around as a child medium and clairvoyant by her father, Reuben Buck Claflin, in Ohio. Her symptoms, among other things, suggest that she had a Dissociative Disorder, often developed by children (and adults) when they have experienced a severe or recurrent trauma and are helpless to stop it. Dissociative Disorders are related to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. There is a fair amount of evidence that she was sexually abused by her father and possibly even pregnant by him. She was, depending on which sources you believe, 12, 13, or 14 when Canning "cured" her & then proposed. Again, depending upon which source you believe, her parents agreed to the marriage OR her father let Canning have Victoria in exchange for canceling a gambling debt. They were married when Victoria was 13, 14, or 15 (14 was the technical age of consent) in October or November of 1852 or 1853. Canning proved to be a heavy drinker, gambler, and womanizer -- later an opium addict too. Of course, if a teenaged girl had been pawned off on him as a virgin who was actually pregnant by incest, he might have reason to DRINK! A boy child, Byron Woodhull, was born to them in December of 1853. He was profoundly retarded, never learned to speak, and never developed teeth. As I said above, he might actually have been Reuben Buck Claflin's child, not Canning's. I don't have a solid date of death for him. A second child, Zulu Maud Woodhull (who later called herself Zula Maud Woodhull)was born to them on April 2, 1861. Victoria and Zulu nearly bled to death because cAnning was too drunk to tie off the umbilical cord properly after the birth. She left him and divorced him ca. 1864, but took Canning back in in about 1871, when he was dying of his addictions. She nursed & supported him, with the complete approval of her then-husband, James H. Blood, until he died about April 8, 1872, in NY NY. I don't have a solid date of death for Zulu Maud either. Neither Zulu nor Byron Canning (the son) ever married. Victoria was famous -- notorious -- as a spiritualistic, woman suffrage supporter, free love supporter, and the first female candidate for president of the US. There are some good but old books about her, including Mary Gabriels' Notorious Victoria (1998). I am writing a new one. Let me know if I can tell you more. It's probably not going to be in World Connect unless it's a rare tree with some actual documented research behind it.? To find those parents, look to Licking co probate records, guardianship papers, land records, etc. which will help you line up this family correctly.? Can someone answer this question for me: What does "gatewayed" mean when messages are said to be sent to a list this way? 3. Folks- What brought this on was a post listing taxpayers in Licking County, Ohio, in 1863. The NARA article does not mention Ohio and the list of microfilms does not include it. The post did not include Burlington Twp. which is the object of my interest in this newfound source of information. Thanks to all. If anyone can find a marriage bond or license,a childs birth certificate, and send it to me it will be greatly appreciated. I have tried for many years to locate Grandfather Bede's parents but nothing so far. Anything with their name on it will be wonderful.Thank you. Wanda M. Porter Nelsen.
