Hi Helen, The LDS website shows a marriage for Joseph Hochgesang to Elizabeth Ruprecht on July 11, 1871 in Lawrence County, Ohio. The Lawrence County website confirms this date (at least in terms of the fact that it is found in the volume that contains the 1871 marriages). Additionally, a search on the Lawrence County website shows that Joseph ran a distillery in Ironton at "the south side of Pine between 3rd and 4th, according to the 1882 - 1883 Ironton Business Directory. A check of my Lawrence County resource books show nothing with this surname (at least spelled like it is). These books are Hardesty's Atlas, published in 1882, and the History of Lawrence County, Volumes 1 and 2 (published in 1990 and 2004, respectively). A check of my cemetery books shows the following grave: Hochgesang, Maria Margaretha, born on July 25, 1834, died on May 15, 1871, wife of J. This was in Calvary Cemetery, Section E, Upper Township, Lawrence County, Ohio. Just as a side note here, there appear to be a lot of German names in this cemetery. It's a large cemetery. There is a listing for an obituary for Mary Ann "Hochesang" in Lawrence County. It was in the Ironton Journal, May 24, 1871. A partial listing states, "Wife of Joseph, died in Ironton, 36 years." Additionally, there is a listing for an obituary for Joseph "Hochesang" in Lawrence County from 1900 through 1930 (a large span). An additional check of Ironton death records from 1909 - 1945 do not show Joseph there, so it's possible that he died in the range of 1900 through 1909. There are two Lawrence County websites to check for further information. They are www.lawrencecountyohio.com and http://www.scioto.org/Lawrence/catalogs/catalog.html. I hope that I have given you some good leads! - Jean Griesan Colorado -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, June 21, 2005 7:23 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [OHLAWREN] Hochgesang Hi, I am trying to check out a Joseph Hochgesang, possible child of Andreas Hochgesang and Martina Benkert who came into Dubois Co., IN, bef. 1850 from Bavaria, Germany. I think Joseph stopped at Lawrence Co (Ironton) as I found one that would fit in the 1860-1880 censuses. In 1900 he is in Dayton (Montgomery Co) where he may have died. Is there a mailing list for Montgomery Co? I tried what I think would work for an address-- but it bounced. I need marriage, death records. Can anyone help me with this fellow? thanks.
