I found one Clark Co. McCartney family, another in Erie Co. and more in Lawrence Co. All there at about the right time, 1818. Notes at the bottom, reveal what I've found about these families so far. Our line was protestant and often associated with IOOF and Grange. I was curious if there's any overlap with your lineage? John Eielson McCartney, Seattle 1. Nathaniel MCCARTNEY ( MCCARTNEY1) was born 1818 in Clark Co., Ohio, and died 7 JUN 1856 in 'In the forks of the Santiam,' Salem, Linn, Ore.. He was buried 9 JUN 1856 in Odd Fellows Rural Cemetery, Salem, Ore., Lot 45, corner of Hoyt and Commercial Streets in South Salem. The land on which the cemetery is located was originally part of the Reverend David Leslie land c. He married Abigail M PARKER 1 JUL 1840 in La Porte Co., Indiana, daughter of John PARKER and Beulah CRANMER. She was born 6 JAN 1820 in Little Egg Harbor, Monmouth, N.J., and died 6 MAR 1864 in Butte, Calif.. Children of Nathaniel MCCARTNEY and Abigail M PARKER are: + 2 i. William Henry Harrison MCCARTNEY was born 1842 in Indiana, and died 17 MAY 1916 in Red Bluff, Tehama, Calif.. + 3 ii. Mary Louisa MCCARTNEY was born 1844 in Indiana, and died in Calif., U.S.. 4 iii. Benjamin F MCCARTNEY was born 1846 in Indiana, and died in U.S.. 5 iv. Albert MCCARTNEY was born 1848 in Indiana, and died ABT 1891 in Tehama, Calif.. 6 v. John Lyman MCCARTNEY was born 1850 in Indiana, and died 8 JUL 1895 in Red Bank, Tehama, Calif.. 7 vi. Thomas Nathaniel MCCARTNEY was born 18 NOV 1855 in Salem, Linn, Oregon, and died 21 JUL 1930 in Red Bluff, Tehama, Calif.. In Ohio records, I found the following data: William McCartney, 1818 Tax Records, Book 407, Pages 53-55, Original land title, Clark County. My GG grandpa Nathaniel McCartney was b: abt 1819 in Clark Co., also named his first son William. This might be the right guy. But I haven't been able to locate any records on his childrens' names, though census indicates he had them. Another prospect: According to McCartney family lore we had a connection with a former U.S. president. Nathaniel named his first son, my G grandfather, William Henry Harrison McCartney. Looking in Ohio, around 1820, for possible parents of Nathaniel, I found the following on Ancestry.com: WILLIAM McCARTNEY, born 18 Oct 1792, place unknown, and died 19 Feb 1878 near Venice, Margaretta Twp., Erie Co., Ohio. A farmer, he is believed to have settled in the Venice community about 1812, and served as a scout under Generals William Henry Harrison and Wayne in the War of 1812. He married ELIZA COOPER 20 Jan 1819 at Mt. Vernon, Knox Co., Ohio. "Ella", as Eliza was called, was born in New Jersey in 1799, moving to Knox Co., OH in 1807. She died 20 Jan 1871 Margaretta Twp., Erie Co., OH. The couple are reported to have had two sons and two daughters. The obituaries of the couple were published in the SANDUSKY DAILY REGISTER, Sandusky, Ohio. I've received copies of this fellow's obit from www.rbhayes.org and he doesn't appear to be the right one.
Hi Bill, I have done a lot of McCartney research on Daniel McCartney who lived in Lawrence County, Ohio from about 1807 through 1834 or 1835. It is believed that they were in Indiana for several years, and then moved on to Coles County, Illinois around 1837. Some of the family died there, such as Daniel, in 1847. His wife, Sarah (Price) McCartney came back to Lawrence County to live with her son, William, and she died there in 1861. A number of the children migrated farther from Illinois. Daniel's biography is posted on the Lawrence County website at: http://www.lawrencecountyohio.com/families/k_p/McCartneyDaniel.htm. I hope this helps in your quest for Nathaniel. I do believe that another McCartney (seemingly unrelated to my Daniel) showed up in Lawrence County in the 1820s or 1830s. I you are interested, I can dig through my correspondence and find the gal to contact and give you the name of who she is researching. - Jean Griesan Colorado -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Thursday, August 18, 2005 9:56 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [OHLAWREN] Re: McCartney, Wiseman This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
