On the Bath Kentucky list I asked for verification of an 1827 marriage. I've been doing genealogy now since January 1970 when by good fortune my father's company relocated him to our ancestral home and someone asked him if he was related to the guy who helped build a community about 4 miles away. That started the whole ball rolling, and it never lost steam. This past July I published my first family genealogy of the Tope family, which includes the Rices, but still my Charles was a brick wall. I installed ancestry.com yesterday and found the 1860 census which gives my Charles as the head of household, and unmarried (which is correct), and living with him in Lawrence County, Ohio are Sarah age 60, his older brother Thomas J. age 24, and his younger brother David age 17. Every census agrees that Charles, was born in Kentucky. And the 1860 says that Charles, Thomas, and Sarah were all born in Kentucky and David was born in Ohio. If that's correct than the family left Kentucky sometime around 1843. For those in Bath County, are there any county histories or anything that might include William and Sarah (Sally) Lynam Rice, that might list children or something? I stumbled upon a "World family tree" genealogy that also lists another brother for Charles as Richard. And there's a Richard living next door to Charles and family in the 1860 census. This is where I discovered the marriage date for Sarah and William, and it intrigued me because I then did a search in Lawrence County and found William! But here's what's weird while they all live in Symmes Twp., Lawrence County, Ohio, William does not live with his family; or at least that's not how the census was taken. He lives a few doors down with a collier, and he's listed as a laborer. Was this typical? I've never seen this before. I doubt that they were divorced. But he's 65 and she's 60 and both are listed as born in Kentucky. The ages make it very possible for these two to be the William and Sarah Lynam Rice that are supposedly my ancestors, but does anyone know why they'd appear in different households? On page 2 of Arabia, Symmes Twp., Lawrence County, Ohio census is William Rice and on page 4 is the rest of his family Richard age 29 head of his own household, then as I said above Charles 22, Sarah age 60, Thomas J. age 24, and David age 17. Does this make sense to anyone? For years it was thought that Charles W. Rice was the Charles W. Rice in the 1850 Bath County Census. But I have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that that is not true. That Charles does not have the right siblings, AND he also appears in the 1860 census as C. Wallace Rice, whereas my C.W. Rice shows up in Lawrence County the same year. I have been unable to locate my Rice family in the 1850 census whether in Kentucky or Ohio, and have even done a nationwide search. I'm stumped again. BTW, I've still not concluded concretely that the Sarah that Charles is living with is Sarah Lynam or that the William living in Arabia is the William who married Sarah Lynam, this is all speculation that I'm trying desperately to prove.
