Hi Nancy - it's Lorna here. There's a lengthy article in "History of Lawrence Co. OH 1990", which should answer your question - article submitted by Robert L. Lewis, Jr. gr-gr-gr-grandson of Zebulon Gillette. It appears H.N. (Horatio Nelson) married twice which would explain the younger children. Let's see if I can boil this down: Zebulon Gillett, son of John and Comfort Plumb Gillett, was b.23 Mar 1769 in Milford CT - he m.Rachel Griswold, dau of Jeremiah & Phobe Case Griswold (she was b.2 May 1771 in Burlington CT. They had 3 children: Frances Marian b.12 Apr 1795 in Burlington CT, Horatio Nelson b.1799 and Sidney b.28 Mar 1801 in Seneca Co. NY. Rachel d. soon after Sidney's birth. In NY, Zebulon m.Elizabth & they had 6 children; Phoebe, Rachel, Parmelia, Sarah, Lawrence, and Fidelio. In 1817 Zebulon & family, along with his brothers, Joel, William, John, and sister, Comfort, arived in Quaker Bottom after having spent a year in Marietta OH. All but John settled & farmed land in Quaker Bottom. John, the youngest, went on west and was lost track of. Comfort married Nathaniel Pritchard. Zebulon's brother, Joel brought 200 grafted apple trees.....from Marietta....he gave some sprouts to his son Alanson.....one tree proved so choice that Horatio Gillett cut some scions from it and grafted them. He named it Rome Beauty, or Gillett's Seedling. Horatio also represented Law. Co. at the 2nd Ohio Convention for the Revision of the Constitution of the State of OH in 1850 & 1851..................................... The children of Zebulon Gillett all m. in Law. Co. Frances Marian m.James Nash, Horatio Nelson m. Sara Wilson on 30 Dec 1824 & his 2nd wife, Elizabeth on 19 Mar 1855. Sidney m. Christiana Wilgus, Phoebe m.1st David McLaughlin, and 2nd Henry Radford; Rachel m. Israel Hanley, Parmelia m.Bartimeus Beardsley, Sarah m.Charles Hall, Lawrence m.Aurelia McClure, & Fidelio m.Loanza H. Horation Nathaniel Gillett, cousin of Alanson. I feel sure one or the other is in error and that "Horatio Nelson" and "Horatio Nathaniel" are one and the same person. Anyway, the last para of this article says "Capt. H.N. Oh, Lorna, thank you so much. Nice to hear from you again. Now here I was going through my files and checking out Ancestry.com for the umpteenth time and completely forgot to look in the LawCo history book, so your email fortunately kicked another of my neurons into gear. This is really helpful. I descend from Joel and Chloa (Griswold) Gillett and am trying to confirm or refute James O. Gillett descends from Joel also as some Gillett/Gillette researchers are indicating. This helps to refute that. I agree with you that Horatio "Nelson" and Horatio "Nathaniel" are one and the same - until someone shows me evidence to the contrary - and that he is the nephew of Joel Gillett, not his son.
