It would perhaps help to know what time period, but a quick glance at the 1860 census for Lawrence County shows the 16 Pleasants to be a male name (nationwide it is primarily male as well). The two Welcomes (Johnson and Wilson) are female in Lawrence County, but nationwide by and large it is primarily a male name, and according to an1870 dictionary with Christian names in the back Francis with an "i" is male, though in Lawrence County in 1860 the census recorded both sexes with the 'i'. Of course census takers made a lot of errors. :-) Hope this helps.
