A Delayed B.Certificate was filed in Elk County, PA in 1945 by Joseph William Raine then of Alderson, Greenbrier County, WVA who was born May 11, 1893 at Empire/Rainetown in Spring Creek Twp. Elk County,PA.His father Thomas W. Raine, was born January 13, 1851 at Paddy Creek, Ohio. His mother was Katherine Katherine Zahiser (nee Montgomery) Raine born about 1855 in Clarion County, PA. It's likely Katherine (nee Montgomery) was the second wife of Thomas W. Raine first wife having been Mary E. (nee Carrier) married on October 16,1873. Tombstone records for Carrier Cemetery,Clover Twp in Summerville list the names of numerous members of early Carrier familes. The name Mary Eveline Carrier lists her birth as in 1851 death in 1881. Listed in book of deaths in Jefferson county include the names: Ruth C. Raine died as infant in 1874; Thomas R. Raine, died 1880 (probably son of Thomas and Mary who drowned at Crow Run (place of early saw mill). These were probably children of Thomas and Mary E. (nee Carrier). puzzle. Thomas purchased 1,550 acres in Spring Creek Twp. Elk County,PA where he intended to cut and take out timber. He eventually build a saw mill then a railroad to move the logs out of the woods. The vilage which grew up around the sawmill became known as Rainetown. He remained in charge until about 1894 when his brother John W. Raine joined him and business became known as Raine and Raine. Mill closed down about 1904-1905. Brothers had become partners of the Raine Andrews Company, organized in 1901, near Evenwood,WVA According to Greenbrier, WVA history the brothers formed the Meadow River Lumber Company which operated in Raineelle WV from 1906 to 1975. It became the largest hardwood sawmill in the "world." The brothers Rain, In 1903 had purchased 100,000 acres of land containing the last large stands of virgin hardwood in USA. The brothers became very successful. The village which grew up around the mill became known as Rainelle. Thomas William Rain died 6/22/1922 in Fairview Twp., Erie County PA burial at Fairview Cemetery. His wife,Katherine Zahiser (nee Montgomery) born May 13, 1855 died November 3, 1944 same location. John Raine died in 1940 probably in Greenbrier. There is confusion about marriages, and children of John W.Raine. which I am trying to get correct. Vague information indicates that John was married three times. Only found reference to one of his wives whose first name was Elma dna possibly maiden name was Emma M. (nee Groves). Possible error in surname listed as marriage in ElkCounty records: marriage 5/17/1887 of John M. Paine (probably Raine )age 43,lumberman of Polk Twp.,Jefferson County,PA,widowed two times,to Emma M.(nee Groves) age 24,single. Son of John Raine, Richard O.Raine, was born January 10, 1897 at Rainetown. Mother listed as Edna. Other children parents listed as John and Elma Raine: Margaret H.born 10/5/1900 Empire and John born 3/6/1902 at Empire., I would like to learn the names of the parents of Thomas and John Rain once of Lawrence County, Ohio. Raines at Lawrence County,Ohio in 1880 (online) Fed Census lists John Raine born Ironton about 1863 apparent parents Joseph and Ruth Raine. Residents Joseph A. and wife Julia Raine and Joseph H. and Susanna Raine. I will appreciate any and all assistance to discover the names of the parents of John and Thomas Raine and straighten out the names of the wives of John and Thomas W.Raine. I'm willing to share what I have already compiled about the family. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
