    1. [OHLAWREN] Sumpter family of Lawrence County
    2. I have collected a lot of "tidbits" on the Sumpters of Lawrence County. Since there isn't that many of this surname in the county I believe them to be one family. I believe this is the way the Sumpter lineage goes but since most of it is before the 1850 census when children were named I need proof. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Richard Sumpter is listed in the 1818 tax records of Lawrence County. He is in 1820-1850 census records for Union Township in Law. Co. He is shown to have been born in VA. I have found a Richard Sumpter who married in 1800 in VA to Mary Kingery. Also there is a marriage in 1813 in Gallia County Records for a marriage by a Richard Sumpter. I believe the children of Richard are as follows: Edmund Margaret married Daniel H. Markins on Sept. 17, 1831 George married Betsy Adkins March 8, 1833 Polly married William Pigman on Oct 19, 1837 Nancy married Andrew Snell on April 10, 1840 Samuel married Drucilla (or Mary) Adkins on Feb. 18, 1858 Frances married Thomas Markin on July 24, 1817. (they moved to IN) Elizabeth married Martin Earles on Oct 15, 1819 (all of these marriages were in Lawrence Co.) I believe that Edmund is my direct ancestor. The confusion is in the 1860 census. There is an Edmund living with my g-grandmother (after her marriage in 1855) but there is also an Edmund living with a Benjamin Johnston family. The age for one is shown as 46 and the other 52. I do not know if this is one person listed with 2 families and the age is just an error??? There is an Edmund Sumpter who married Nancy Snell on Aug. 21, 1831 in Lawrence Co.. Simeon Sumpter who was born Nov. 24, 1833 and died Jan. 3, 1917 death certificate shows these people as his parents. I believe my g- grandmother Margaret Ann (born about 1835) is the child of theirs also. She named one of her sons Simeon. The confusion is the 2 Edmunds (or is it 1) in the 1860 census. To make this more confusing I cannot locate Margaret or Simeon in an 1850 census. Both did not marry until mid 1850s so should have been at home in 1850 census. Again any help/leads anyone can supply me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
