A quit claim deed is just that. The signers are promising to no longer make any claims against the land described in the deed. I does sound to me as if quite possibly that Thomas W Morrison sr is the father of John, and with John dead, his children and their spouses would be heirs of his portion of the land. Range 17, township 2, section 34 (section 36 would be the SE corner of the township, so 34 is a couple of miles west. A township is 6 miles square, divided into 36 one mile square sections.) Township 1 in Range 17 is just a partial township with the Ohio River being its south boundary. Thomas W Morrison didn't have to have lived in Lawrence Co to own land. It is very common for one of the older heirs to buy out their siblings (or as in this case a siblings heirs also) Are all those listed children you have positively id'd as children of John? If they are, Thomas 2 and John may have been the only children of Thomas sr., or Thomas W 2 was a son of John (named for his grand father) and he was buying out his sibs. Records keepers made mistakes, but Thomas W for John is a real stretch I think you need to follow the ownership forward to confirm this person as being the son of John or not. Do you have the volume and page on those deeds? If you can send them, I could look at them and see if anything about them would change my take as listed above. The problem is that I don't really understand the deeds as they involve a "Quit Claim" deed that lists the children and their spouses of my John Morrison; but says that they are heirs of Thomas W. Morrison. I am just uncertain who this original Thomas W. Morrison was and how he fits in. If I could examine the tax information in those years between 1843 and 1864 maybe I could find if Thomas W. and my John were the same person; or possibly Thomas W. was the grandfather of John's listed children; or how they were related. 1. The original deed was from 10-27-1843; Tract 17-2-34 SWSE(Fayette Twp just NE of South Point); sold by Wm. McCoy to Thomas W. Morrison (1). 2. The Quit Claim Deed was for the same tract of land on 7-6-1864; sold to the heirs of Thomas W. Morrison and then Thomas W. Morrison (2) bought the other siblings out. At least that's what I think happened. John and Sara Morrison's children listed below are the one's listed on the Quit Claim deeds. 3. Just another couple of notes: Thomas W. Morrison (2) was only 3 years old when the original deed was issued to Thomas W. Morrison (1). And I can find no record where Thomas W. Morrison (1) ever lived in Lawrence County. So I am just confused and grasping at straws. I am researching my MORRISON Family. My John Morrison was born c. 1801 in VA/WV? And died after the 1860 census and probably prior to the 1870 Census in Fayette Twp., Lawrence Co., OH. His wife Sara Ankrim was born c. 1799 in VA/WV? And died prior to the 1860 census. I have not been able to find either death record or location. Their children were Samuel, William D., James A., John, & Thomas Wilson Morrison and are the heirs listed on the Quit Claim deed above.
