Kate, I was visiting that area last month and I was told to just pull onto the grassy edge of the cemetery. You have to be careful of traffic and not getting too far off the road and onto a grave but it wasn't that much of a problem to get out and tour the cemetery. Also it looked like the house next door was empty so the 2nd visit I made I parked in that driveway figuring noone would care if their was no one living there. If you don't know where the people are actually buried in the cemetery you can go to Briggs Library (Hamner /Generalogy Room) and they have a map to help you locate the graves. The Hamner Room has a lot of genealogy information that you might want to check out too. Good luck. -----Original Message----- >From: brandiwynem@peoplepc.com >Sent: Oct 27, 2008 10:48 AM >To: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com, ohlawren@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [OHLAWREN] White Cottage Cemetery > >Kate, >Even if White Cottage is on private property, all it would take is asking >the owner for permission which I am sure will not be denied. I believe my reply to your post may have gotten lost in the void, so I'm reposting just in case. First of all, thanks so much for all your help! My gr-grandfather Washington A. Gilliland's grave is marked with a headstone "W. Gilliland" noting his CW service with Co. A, 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery. He is buried in the Mann family plot, as his daughter Ada married into the Mann family. Washington Gilliland was born to George and Julina Canter Gilliland in Hamilton Twp of Jackson County, and lived only the last few years of his life in South Point, where he was employed as a bridge watchman. According to the index and map I have, these are the grave numbers: W. Gilliland, #41 Ada Mann, #42 Frank J. Mann, #43 Again, your help is greatly appreciated. -- Kate Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. When we were in South Point in June, there was no nontrespassing sign there. Kate, Even if White Cottage is on private property, all it would take is asking the owner for permission which I am sure will not be denied. To find the owner only take contacting the tax office in the Lawerence County Courthouse.
