Hello. My gg or gggrandfather Richard Morrison lived in Lawrence County,IL. with two sons. Thinking John and Charles. Unsure of Charles tho. Does any one know what twp he lived in? When i was in there i never thought of twp. But if some one has an old book, tax records, or directory. Thank you. Merry Christmas. Viola.
Nancy - go to Google and search for "Horatio Nelson Gillette" - you will see a very interesting google book article and picture of one of his sons, Preston Wilson Gillette. Oddly, the book is "Portland, Oregon, Its History & Builders" but this article concerns Gillette in Law. Co. OH. ----- Original Message ----- From: Nancy Edwards To: ohlawren@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, December 19, 2008 7:47 PM Subject: Re: [OHLAWREN] James O. Now here I was going through my files and checking out Ancestry.com for the umpteenth time and completely forgot to look in the LawCo history book, so your email fortunately kicked another of my neurons into gear. This is really helpful. I descend from Joel and Chloa (Griswold) Gillett and am trying to confirm or refute James O. Gillett descends from Joel also as some Gillett/Gillette researchers are indicating. This helps to refute that. I agree with you that Horatio "Nelson" and Horatio "Nathaniel" are one and the same - until someone shows me evidence to the contrary - and that he is the nephew of Joel Gillett, not his son. Hi Nancy - it's Lorna here. There's a lengthy article in "History of Lawrence Co. OH 1990", which should answer your question - article submitted by Robert L. Lewis, Jr. gr-gr-gr-grandson of Zebulon Gillette. It appears H.N. (Horatio Nelson) married twice which would explain the younger children. Let's see if I can boil this down: Zebulon Gillett, son of John and Comfort Plumb Gillett, was b.23 Mar 1769 in Milford CT - he m.Rachel Griswold, dau of Jeremiah & Phobe Case Griswold (she was b.2 May 1771 in Burlington CT. They had 3 children: Frances Marian b.12 Apr 1795 in Burlington CT, Horatio Nelson b.1799 and Sidney b.28 Mar 1801 in Seneca Co. NY. Rachel d. soon after Sidney's birth. In NY, Zebulon m.Elizabth & they had 6 children; Phoebe, Rachel, Parmelia, Sarah, Lawrence, and Fidelio. In 1817 Zebulon & family, along with his brothers, Joel, William, John, and sister, Comfort, arived in Quaker Bottom after having spent a year in Marietta OH. All but John settled & farmed land in Quaker Bottom. John, the youngest, went on west and was lost track of. Comfort married Nathaniel Pritchard. Zebulon's brother, Joel brought 200 grafted apple trees.....from Marietta....he gave some sprouts to his son Alanson.....one tree proved so choice that Horatio Gillett cut some scions from it and grafted them. He named it Rome Beauty, or Gillett's Seedling. Horatio also represented Law. Co. at the 2nd Ohio Convention for the Revision of the Constitution of the State of OH in 1850 & 1851..................................... The children of Zebulon Gillett all m. in Law. Co. Frances Marian m.James Nash, Horatio Nelson m. Sara Wilson on 30 Dec 1824 & his 2nd wife, Elizabeth on 19 Mar 1855. Sidney m. Christiana Wilgus, Phoebe m.1st David McLaughlin, and 2nd Henry Radford; Rachel m. Israel Hanley, Parmelia m.Bartimeus Beardsley, Sarah m.Charles Hall, Lawrence m.Aurelia McClure, & Fidelio m.Loanza H. Beardsley. ___________________________________ There is another article in this book submitted by Mrs. Donald Gillett, titled "Rome Beauty Apple" - .......unfortunately it refers to Capt. Horation Nathaniel Gillett, cousin of Alanson. I feel sure one or the other is in error and that "Horatio Nelson" and "Horatio Nathaniel" are one and the same person. Anyway, the last para of this article says "Capt. H.N. Gillette's son James Oregon Gillette inherited the family farm; then his son Robert Preston Gillette, and his son Donald Oregon Gillette, who continues to operate the Gillette family farm (the 4th generation) in 1990. ----- Original Message ----- From: Nancy Edwards To: ohlawren@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, December 19, 2008 6:00 PM Subject: [OHLAWREN] James O. Viola, If you go to the Lawrence Co. Recorder's site at www. lawrencecountyohiorecorder .org [no spaces] and click on the 'record search' tab and then the 'search her' tab on the bottom of the next page, you can search for a variety of records in the Recorder's office for 1982 to current. Choosing name and advanced search you can specify which type of record you are interested in. There are quite a few MORRISON entries. Hi Folks, Once again the list has been spammed with numerous genealogical disks that one can buy. Well, the truth of the matter is these books are all FREE and SEARCHABLE online on Google books, or Making of America, or Library of Congress, or even other sites. And most of them are downloadable should you wish to keep a hardcopy on disk or paper. I've notified all the lists that I'm on as soon as this came in. With the economy the way it is we don't need to waste our precious money on things that are available for FREE! Anytime disks are being sold, do a google search and see what you get. There's very little that's in the public domain that isn't available FREE someplace today. :-) Merry Xmas, Linda Trent 1850 Indiana Gazetteer or Topographical Dictionary of the State of Indiana http://books.google.com/books?id=GxYVAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA3 Indiana: in Relation to its Geography, Statistics, Institutions, County Topography, Etc.; with a Reference Index to and Colton's Maps of Indiana, 1852 http://books.google.com/books?id=hYkUAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA1 Gazetteer of the St. Joseph Valley, Michigan and Indiana, with a view of its hydraulic and business capacities http://books.google.com/books?id=Eo8UtL7TXysC&pg=PA6 Geo.
