    1. [OHLAWREN] Lawrence County Lore
    2. I am intrigued by the mention of the Lawrence County lore. Have there been previous postings? Where could I read them? Coal Grove and Ironton are the hub of my Carlan and Boyce family history. 1. [OHLAWREN] Andrew Jackson Boling/Bowling/etc.
    2. Merry Anne/Pierson
    3. Dr. Andrew Jackson Bowling b. ca 1820 died ca 1868 was supposedly living in Waterloo on Big Ice Creek during the civil war. Family stories say that he treated some of Morgan's men when they came through Lawrence Co and Morgan tired to recruit him but he said no. In 1860 the family was living in Morgan Co, KY. I haven't had success at finding them in 1870 and I think I found them back in Morgan County KY on the 1880 census minus Andrew. The reason I say I think is because there are two extra males living in the family named Bowling and all the family research to date doesn't have those two children. I'd love to know if they were really in Lawrence County ca 1862-1865. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Children in this family: Sarah 2 May 1853 A J Hiram 12 June 1855 Synthia (Cynthia) ca 1856 George W (DR>) 6 march 1858 Columbus Alexander ca 1860 And maybe Napolean ca 1862 and Susie ca 1868 Thanks, Merry Anne Pierson

    1. [OHLAWREN] Dr. Andrew Jackson Bowling (any spelling) 1864 Waterloo
    2. Merry Anne/Pierson
    3. Hi, list. I could use a bit of help for this one. Dr. Andrew Jackson Bowling aka Bolling, Boling, Bolen etc. was born ca 1820 (some say 1808 but 1860 census says 1820) in NC and was married to a Mary Blankenship in KY. During the civil war, he supposedly was practicing medicine in Waterloo, Lawrence County, OH. Family stories say he lived near Big Ice Creek. The story also says that he was made to treat some of Morgan's men when Morgan came through Lawrence Co. In the 1860 census he's in KY. Haven't been able to locate the family in 1870 census. Supposedly Dr. A J Bowling died ca 1864. I don't know where. Does anybody recognize this family and if so, can you share the information. I'm trying to piece together his line. He is supposed to be a descendant on the "red line" from Pocahontas but you know how that goes<G> Thanks, Merry Anne Pierson

    1. [OHLAWREN] Lunsford marriage record lookup 1825-1860s
    2. Carrie Hoffert
    3. Hello to all Lawrence County list members, I am looking for a marriage record of a William Lunsford to a Lucinda (or a similar first name of the bride) from the period of 1825-1835. I do not have a maiden name for the bride. Also I need a lookup for a 2nd marriage for this same William Lunsford to a Martha (Day.) Martha may have been married previously as well so any WM Lunsford married to a Martha after 1838 could potentially be the correct marriage????? The ONLY record I have found that supports this "theory" is the marriage records of their 2 sons, William Jr and Andrew. Both of the sons were born between 1835 & 1838 in Lawrence Co, OH. They were both married in the mid 1800s in Wayne Co, WV. At the time of their marriages, BOTH brothers listed their parents thus; Wm and L Lunsford. No given name for their mother, just the letter L, BUT in the margin of Andrew's record is the notation LUCINDA. I have checked all appropriate census records for the periods, but as family names were not included until 1850 records that has been to no avail. I have never been able to find an online marriage record for a William Lunsford and anyone with the name beginning with the letter L. I also have been unable to find a marriage record for what may have been a SECOND marriage for William Lunsford Sr and a MARTHA DAY..I think this 2nd marriage exists for the following reasons. On the DEATH record of William Lunsford JR (in Lawrence Co, OH) she is listed as his mother..but the person giving that info was a full generation later, so they may not have known that she was his stepmother and not his biological mother. As there were only 2 children as a result of the marriage of William Lunsford Sr and this "L" (possibly Lucinda) I also cannot reconcile that she may not have died prior to any other children resulting. Of course I do NOT know exactly when this 2nd marriage may have taken place, but it would have to have been PRIOR to the death of William Sr, and certainly BEFORE the death of William Jr in 1915. I am guessing that the 2nd marriage of William Sr would have taken place between 1839 and 1860 . This is based on the timeframes of the marriages of both sons and the births of their first children. I think if their biological mother had lived until her grandchildren had been born that there would have been later family knowledge of her????? So many QUESTIONS still open, with no marriage records, birth records, or census records available to me in GA, this marriage lookup becomes one of the best avenues of potential leads. So if someone out there has access to marriage records of this timeframe and will do a lookup, I would be so grateful. This would help clear up a major brick wall in the search for info on my GGG-Grandparents, William and L Lunsford. Even if I can find a record that shows that Martha Day and William Lunsford were not married UNTIL AFTER the births of Andrew & William JR, that would clear up that she WAS NOT their biological mother as well. Thanks in advance, Carrie Atlanta, GA

    3. Wow, that is wonderful information, thank you. Madison Co, Indiana is where most of my Nelson's ended up....at least the ones who didn't come to Illinois. They pretty much were in Anderson, Madison Co., IN. and there is a large Nelson cemetery there with lots of them. It appears though that some went back to Lawrence Co. which I didn't know. I'll have to check Douglas Co, IL for information. Presently I only know about my direct line of Nelson's being in Knox Co, IL, because that's were my mother was born. But she was given up for adoption after birth because her mother (Alma Nelson), was a young unwed teen and her parents wouldn't let her keep her baby. So it's been difficult for me to find out who these ppl are, where they came from, etc. My mom passed away nearly 3 yr ago and didn't know them either, so I didn't have much to get me started. Thanks again, Sue -----Original Message----- From: fkb [mailto:genealogynut@peoplepc.com] Sent: Saturday, February 28, 2009 9:33 AM To: ohlawren@rootsweb.com; ohlawren@rootsweb.com; ohgallia@rootsweb.com Cc: suzetx@comcast.net Subject: Re: [OHLAWREN] Seeking Marriage Information There is a book entitled "Neals of Bedford County VA and Family of Walter Neal, Sr. of Lawrence & Gallia Counties Ohio" by Chester I. Miller. Nancy Cassandra "Cassie" Armstrong is a descendant of these lines. It is from this book that I got the Benham/Henry etc information. Henry Nelson and Benjamin Boggs were cousins who married sisters. The only mention of Benjamin Nelson is that Henry and Benjamin were his grandsons. Since it shows that Benjamin Franklin Boggs died in IL I would assume that he and Henry moved together to that state. Benjamin Franklin Boggs born July 12, 1832 the son of Alexander and Mahala Nelson Boggs; died Feb. 25, 1902 in IL (no county/city named). He married Mary Jane Armstrong in Lawrence County on Dec. 20, 1853. After their marriage they moved to Madison County, Indiana, then back to Lawrence County, Ohio where 4 of their children were born. Then they moved to IL living in both Douglas and Champaign Counties. He was a judge in Douglas County, IL. The author says he has no information on their children except for the following: Elena or Elma born 1856 in OH Allie Born May 4, 1858 in OH; died Feb. 2, 1872 age 14 in IL Martha born IL in 1860 Stanton born Nov. 22, 1861 in IL; died Oct 18, 1862 buried Nelson Chapel Cemetery. Sarah Harriett born 1864 Sarah Harriett Boggs born 1866 Franklin born 1866Florence born 1868 Cassandra "Cassie" born 1870 Fortune (son) born 1872 Pearl born 1874 Carter born 1876 Maybe you could check Douglas County IL websites for mention of B.F. 3. Yes, it will help, and thanks. Sarah Nelson/Pellington Merritt are mine, and I believe Hannah might be the dtr of of Benjamin Nelson who was also in Gallia Co with Solomon. Is there any info about Benjamin Nelson? Does it mention his wife or children at all? Interesting about Benham's wife Lydia Smith. I don't think I knew her name. Where did you find that? Also I wasn't aware of Henry Nelson at all or his wife Nancy Armstrong. How were you able to find out about their marriage, that they had no children, her return to Ohio then moving to Colorado? I've never found anything like this and I'd love to know how you did this!! I'm wondering if there is more than 1 Benham Nelson? I have a Benham Nelson as a son of Solomon, but this Benham married an Amanda Brewer. Hmmmm.... My Nelson's were living in close proximity to Boggs families in Virginia before they came to Ohio, so I guess they came to Ohio together as well. I don't follow what you are saying here "Henry was the cousin of her sister Mary Jane's husband Benjamin F. Boggs." Can you explain that? I'm a little lost. Thanks so much, and hope to hear from you again. A book on Gallia County from 1825-1875 only has 1 Nelson marriage listed and that was for a Hannah J. Nelson and W. James Cummings on Oct 12, 1865 . Lawrence County Marriage records --April 11, 1817-July 23, 1843 shows a Sarah Nelson who married Pillengton Merritt on Dec 19, 1833 by John Pinkerman, Justice of the Peace. Neals of Bedford County VA book has: Nancy Cassandra (Cassie) Armstrong born April 1845 marrying on March 24, 1864 to Henry Rodney Nelson. Henry was the cousin of her sister Mary Jane's husband Benjamin F. Boggs. Henry Nelson was the son of Benham and Lydia Smith Nelson. He was born in Lawrence County Aug 2, 1838 and died Sept 1874 while they were living in IL. Cassie and he had no children. She returned to Lawrence Co. after his death but then moved to Colorado to live near her youngest sister. she died in CO. 1830 Census shows the following Nelsons living in Law. Co.....(all but William was living in Symmes Township)...Benjamin, Daniel, John, Solomon and William. Sadly the census didn't start listing spouses/children until 1850. Sorry this isn't the marriage records that you wanted but hopefully this will give you some leads to follow. -----Original Message----- >From: Suze in Texas <suzetx@comcast.net> >Sent: Feb 27, 2009 5:30 PM >To: ohlawren@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [OHLAWREN] Seeking Marriage Information > > >Thanks Nancy. 3. Hello. Nancy do you know when Richard Morrison was born. For some odd reason i think your Richard and my Richard are the same man. Im thinking i have his year of birth being in late 1700's like 1797/9. Married Malinda Travers while both were kids. But i could be ten years off. But go to familysearch.com and type richard morrison and it will bring up richard and malinda. But my morrison men once they got married it meant now its time for running for women and every one of my morrison family did it including the women. And my mother was one of them. But they must have been careful because no children showed up or they knew what to do about it. When my last living uncle morrison was living and had cancer some place down below i Thank God his daughter had came to visit. He was living with me and he couldnt urinatebut he never told me so his dau said dad get your pants on your going to the hospital emerency room. While there the doc said " we can take your testickles off and there will be no more pain. He was 88 but he told the doc he was still active. But his dau said Father you will have the surgery im sure you have had enough in your 88 years. O.K. doll and presto they were gone. He never complained of pain and he never stopped watching every women that went by. One time my man asked if his nick ever got sore and my uncle said from what. How old was Mary or what ever you said her name was. Also the two little boys were born ca 1840-1855 where were they and do you know how old she was? Im pretty sure one was John but very unsure about the other one but maybe Charles. It also seems like Charles done time for stealing. But unsure. I could go to the pen and see. Thank you for reading if you did. Viola.
