    3. Hi Nancy, Traveling south from Gallia County, Rome is a tiny community just before Proctorville on State Rt. 7. I don't know if this link will work, but if not you can search Google for "Rome, Ohio" and it should give you a hit with an interactive Google map where you can zoom in and out. Here's the link, if it works http://ohio.hometownlocator.com/oh/lawrence/rome.cfm Linda (who drives past the Rome Fire Department quite often) > Where is it specifically, Carl? Hawes' Ohio State Gazetteer and Business Directory for 1860-61. Historians, genealogists and researchers of mid 19th century Ohio will find the vast amount of related research material in this book on CD invaluable. The extensive 918 pages contain the description of hundreds of places and place names including: cities, towns, villages and post offices of the State of Ohio. The list is simply too large to enumerate here and includes virtually all places both big and small found in 1860 Ohio. The Ohio State Gazetteer... contains hundreds of advertisements by contributing businesses providing historical insight into the goods and services available during this period. Also included on this CD are mid 19th century maps of Ohio including State and township maps, transportation surveys depicting many places and place names along Ohio railroad routes, as well as, a detailed plat map of the City of Cincinnati in 1838. While these maps are not part of the original Ohio State Gazetteer..., researchers interested in place names will find the cartographic information useful for identifying the location of early Ohio settlements. 3. Not to get too far on a tangent, but my grandfather and some of his siblings who lived in Jackson and Lawrence Counties in the early 1900s lived with a family whom my grandmother thought may have been Sipes or Sites. All she could remember was that she thought there was a lady named Velma or Thelma in the household where my grandfather was living as a young un. Does this name show up anywhere in your family research on the Sites surname? His father wasn't much of a father to any of them so they all went somewhere other than home. Forty years later my grandfather's brother finally went to visit his father after they had moved to West Virginia (Mingo County). My grandfather went to his grave never speaking to his father since childhood. --- On Thu, 1/21/10, gc-gateway@rootsweb.com <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> wrote: > From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> > Subject: [OHLAWREN] Sites Family genealogy > To: OHLAWREN-L@rootsweb.com > Date: Thursday, January 21, 2010, 1:34 PM > This is a Message Board Post that is > gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: BRANDYWHEELER83 > Surnames: Sites, Graham,Johnson > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.lawrence/3868/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > Searching for information on the Sites family---My mother's > mother was Pearl grace sites---Pearl Grace Sites was born > 1913 and died 1993 she married Henry Patrick Graham. 3. This came to me via a couple of other mailing lists. It sounds like a good idea to me so I thought I would pass it along. Make it a Great day, everyone, SheilaM Dear List Member, This is the year our country will do a census of all the people living in your household. This is very important for you to fill out and mail back to our government. So please do not forget to fill out your census form and return it. However, before you return it make a copy of it and place it in your genealogy files. I made a copy of my 2000 census before returning it to the government. Your future generation genealogists will be thrilled to find in your files your 2010 census. Remember this census we will fill out this year will not be available for 72 years to the future generations for research. I only wish I had thought of this before 2000 and that I had a copy of all the census records I sent back. Please encourage all your family members to do the same.

    3. I believe the William Sites that died 19 Oct 1966 (he actually died over in Huntington, WV and has a death record in BOTH states....not uncommon in that area) is not the one that was married to Beatrice Johnson. This Wm. Sites wife's name was Lucretia (more commonly known as Cretia). He was the son of Hugh and Cloe Ferris Sites and was born and raised in the Chesapeake/Proctorville area. Cretia died before Wm and he is listed as a widower on his death records. He and Cretia farmed and owned a small grocery store up in the east end of Chesapeake for many years and they went to Chesapeake Christian Church (when I was a child....they may have attended other churches at some time). I have found the three sons of your Wm., but have been unable to find Wm.'s death info. I did find his WWI Draft Registration which list his birth date as 14 Feb 1892 in Lawrence Co., Ohio. He was living in the Columbus area 05 Jun 1917 with a wife and 3 children (Pearl, Frank, and Ralph). He was a boiler maker at Carnegie Steel Co. The Wm. b. 1891 d. 1966 also registered for the draft 05 Jun 1917, was living in Proctorville with his wife and 1 child (Raymond). Both are listed in the 1920 census. I hope I haven't confused the issue too much. I wish our forefather's had left us a little better "road map". I've been trying to untangle my Chapman (3 lines and counting) and Byas/Byus/Bias (at least 2 lines) for years! My frustration level gets high that my kids automatically know when they call that I'm at my wits end! Good luck!
