What was dates for Josiah Brammer- Mary Jane Hastings. I have lots of information on the Brammer family as both of my parents are Brammer descendants.
Dear Listers, What happened to the great site that indexed almost all of the federal census records for that county? It was the BEST thing that I ever saw to keep public records free on the internet. I think that one of the persons who was responsible for a lot of it was named Marta. Thanks for responding Ruth Spanaway WA
Hi Ruth, That fabulous site is still out there. It's at www.lawrencecountyohio.com. Martha and her daughter do a great job of keeping it running! There is also another website that has some Lawrence County information on it. It's at www.scioto.org. Follow the links to the Lawrence County information here. The best parts of this website (in my humble opinion) are the land records and the collection of obituaries. It is also available on this website to be able to submit any obituaries pertaining to Lawrence County. I've been submitting some of the obituaries that I have gathered on this site, and I believe that several others have been doing the same. It's growing into a fine collection. It would be great if others could do the same! - Jean Griesan Colorado -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, July 17, 2005 9:53 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [OHLAWREN] Lawrence County Ohio & Briggs Library Dear Listers, What happened to the great site that indexed almost all of the federal census records for that county? Oops! As my cousin has kindly brought to my attention, I did indeed type the wrong dob for Julia Blake Eaton. She was b circa 1837 rather than 1826. She did live to a ripe old age, but not quite that ripe. Thanks Jean, Nancy Edwards > >

Ok folks - I tried and tried before posting, but I cannot find Julia (Blake) Eaton on the 1920 Census. She died 1927 per the date on her tombstone and per her obit, a copy of which I received today. She may be listed as Julia B. Eaton, Julia A. (Blake) Eaton or Mrs. John P. Eaton. She was b circa 1826 Gallia Co, OH and d Sept 19, 1927 "at her home above Proctorville". She and her husband, John P. Eaton, lived in Rome Twp from the time they married insofar as I can determine. Her husband d 1886. I've checked Ancestry, Heritage Quest and the Census on the Lawco website. I've checked the households of her children. I've tried variant spellings of the surname, first name only, surname only - everything I can think of but without success. I wonder if she's in a hospital somewhere, but my experience has been that this did not preclude the person being included on the Census. Of course, anything is possible. If someone else can find her in 1920 or has suggestions for what else I might try, I'd sure appreciate the help. Regards, Nancy Edwards - Georgia -

In a message dated 6/3/2005 12:50:13 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I have always been curious; The Lawrence Co. Web Site does a great job of providing on-line information. Are there many resources available at the Hamner room that is not available on-line? I have actually been there a couple of times, but it has been quite a few years ago. Bruce, My apologies for not getting back to you sooner. I try to answer the same day, but somehow your email was missed. A few years ago the Hamner Room was moved into what had been the large meeting room. This approx. tripled the space available, and that is getting full, so yes,. there is a wealth of information that is not on line. Microfilming and digitizing is an ongoing project at the courthouse, and they send a copy of the microfilms whenever a new batch is available. The Probate Court area just doesn't have enough room to provide a secure ( for both the records and researcher) room. As in all courthouses, security is on everyone mind, and since it is probate Juvenile, there are often rather strong emotions in play. Kids in trouble and custody stuff. There has been a strong effort to expand the collections, especially records from counties and areas that contributed large groups who moved to Law. Co. There are a lot of new family histories, and quite a bit of new equipment. I've read that an ancestor attended Null Academy in Scottown probably before late 1880's. Can someone tell me if Null Academy still exists and precisely where it was/is located? And more about the school itself - was it equivalent to a college/jr. college or what? The information I have is that this ancestor earned a teacher's certificate there. Thanks for the help. Hi Jean, I'm happy to report that I am going to be going to Ironton myself in a few days! I didn't think I'd be able to do it, but I am. :-) Though for those on the list who are local, where do I have to go (please give names and addresses of buildings) to get: Birth records -- 1902 Marriage records -- 1830 Death records Ledger 3-200 Reg. 3 Deeds -- earliest land records Wills -- 1846 Also, from Mercerville, Gallia County it looks like I should plan to come across 790 to 141 and drop down to Ironton that way? Is that the best way? I'm really psyched about having this opportunity to really come into Lawrence County, rather than just crossing the bridge at Proctorville ;-) Thanks a bunch to everyone! Hi Connie, Thanks so much for taking the time to transcribe these articles for the Lawrence County list! They sure weren't pretty, but hopefully it will help someone in the future. - Jean Griesan Colorado -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, July 07, 2005 10:06 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [OHLAWREN] 1872 News Articles - Lawrence Co. found in Meigs Co. Newspaper I came across the following two related articles regarding Lawrence Co. while going through a Meigs County newspaper. I thought maybe someone on this list could be researching one of these people. Connie Cotterill Schumaker Meigs County Telegraph -- Wednesday, September 11, 1872] Four Men Killed The boiler of Jones and Davis saw mill, on Five-mile, back of Hackelville, exploded on Tuesday of last week. Mr. John I. Jones, Thomas Scarberry, Benj. Terry (colored), and the engineer were killed, and Robert Lewis and one of two others were injured. Mr. Jones was a citizen of Perry Township, Gallia County, and a gentleman much respected by all who knew him [Taken from the Gallipolis Bulletin and published in the Meigs Co. paper] The Meigs Co. Telegraph Wednesday, September 18, 1872 A most terrible affair took place in Lawrence county some two weeks ago. John I. Jones was operating a saw-mill, and in order to get up steam quick after dinner, a quantity of shell bark from hickory was put into the fire. As all know who have used this material, it creates intense heat. The boiler bursted, and the result is thus given by a correspondent of the Ironton Register: [The following gets very graphic and detailed into the description of the injuries received by those who died and may offend some. Just wanted to warm you of this before reading further into the article] "John I. Jones, one of the owners, was with Thomas Scarberry near the mud valve. Jones was blown up a ravine about 75 yards. His bowels were torn out and it appeared as though three bolts had passed through his head; his clothes were all torn off. Thomas Scarberry was blown in the same direction about 100 yards, and in his course struck a tree about 20 feet from the ground, on which is a knot, which appears to have torn his bowels out. His brains with pieces of his jaw-bone, were found scattered near the tree. He was mashed all into a jelly, what was found of him, and all his clothes were torn off. Benjamin Terry was standing in front of the boiler and was blown about 65 yards, and breathed once after he was found. All his clothes were blown off and had a few bruised. Jesse Webb was standing near Terry, and was blown in same direction about 50 yards, his head and arm was blown off and lodged in a small gum tree, about 25 years from the boiler. His clothing all blown off except his shoes and socks. The off bearer, name not known, from Gallia county, said that he was near the saw-dust hole, and when the boiler exploded the shed began to fall, he jumped down and escaped unhurt. The mill was in Joe Miller's field, on the north branch of Five Mile Creek, about five miles from Rome and about four from Athalia. Mr. Jones leaves a wife and five children; Thomas Scarberry, 22 years of age, a wife and one child; Jesse Webb, 25 years of age, a wife and two children. Benjamin Terry(colored), 22 years of age; single. Mr. Jones was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. The explosion was heard about five miles distant. The scene was heart-rending" Transcribed as appears in the paper. No changes made for spelling or grammar. Hi Linda, Did you find a researcher? I can recommend someone if you haven't already found one. - Jean Griesan Colorado -----Original Message----- From: Linda Trent [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, July 07, 2005 8:11 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [OHLAWREN] Need a researcher. Hi Guys, I need to find someone who can help me get a few documents. The first is my gg grandmother's death (Ledger 3-200 Reg.3) the second is a marriage certificate for Abner and Isabel Hall Clarks(t)on, they were married in Lawrence County Nov. 18, 1830, by JP-George Irwin (according to http://www.lawrencecountyohio.com/marriages/marriages/1_2_3/1_2_3ag.htm it reads "Clarkston Abner [and] Isabel Hall 138." I'm also looking for the earliest land deed for John Hall, the father of Isabel. John Hall probably had land in Aid Twp, since that is where he's reported on the 1830 census. It looks like he may have also left a will (my John died in March 1846). According to http://www.lawrencecountyohio.com/wills/index/willbk1.htm it has Book 1 Page 526 HALL, John. Oh, and finally, this is just a fancy that I have, and will probably not pan out, I'd like to have someone check the birth records from "16 May 1901" for a Bessie (perhaps Elizabeth) Mae Hixon. According to her marriage record she was born in Springfield Twp., Clark County, Ohio. However her parents are in Lawrence County just about the time of her birth, and her mother died in Lawrence County a year after her birth. It's possible she was born in Clark, but Clark County has no record of it, and I just really want to check Lawrence ;-) Would someone please contact me privately, if they can check these records for me? I would like to have them ASAP.
