I'm wondering if J.M. Porter is related to William Lee Porter of Pulaski County, Kentucky who was a Baptist minister. Also his son John January Porter was a Baptist minister. Hi! Here's another obituary. - Jean Griesan Colorado Death of Dr. McDowell. Within the last few days, the community of Quaker Bottom have been made sad over the loss of one of their oldest and most useful citizens, Dr. John McDowell. He came to this neighborhood in the year 1832, and since that time, had acted the part of a faithful physician. The people say "No distance was too great no night too inclement, nor no man too poor for Dr. McDowell." During a large portion of his life he was a member of the M. E. Church, but withdrew about two years ago. Since then he frequently attended public services at Rome Chapel. He had been unwell for some time during the spring, but had so far recovered that he visited some patients, but through the effects of exposure he relapsed. The night before he died, he suffered most intensely, but his death was easy, which occurred about half past six in the evening of the 18th of June. His funeral was preached in the orchard, at his residence, by Rev. Henry Berkstresser, on text Phillip II 21st and he was interred in grave yard on his farm. His son, John McDowell, was attending school in Ironton, and expected soon to graduate, when suddenly, he was summoned home to see his father die. He arrived just in time to have him turn his arms around him and say, "My son!" These was the last words he uttered. May the comfort of the religion of our blessed Christ be given both to the bereaved wife and the orphan son. Ironton Journal, June 23, 1869 (Typed as it appeared in the newspaper, grammatical errors and all.)

Hi! Here's another obituary. - Jean Griesan Colorado Died at Portsmouth, O., on the 17th inst., Thos. Lawson, aged 70. Mr. Lawson was one of the pioneers of Scioto county; also, a brother-in-law of W. H. H. Kelly, of Hanging Rock. Ironton Journal, June 23, 1869
Amy and all, Thanks for giving me obituary abriviation lesson:) That really helps alot. I did not know about the information you gave. Thanks a million! Heather ""Inst. is short for "instant." It refers to the most recent occurance of that date or time. For example, if the obituary is dated July 15, then the 11th inst is July 11 and 9th inst is July 9. Similarly, if the obit was published on Thursday, June 30 and it said the death occured on Tuesday inst, that means Tuesday, June 28 (the immediately preceding Tuesday). Another term you might see is "ult.," which is short for "ultimo" and refers to the month preceding. If an obit is dated July 15 and says the death occurred on the 9th ult., the death was on June 9th."

Jean, Yes you have helped me:) John W. Worthington was my great Grandfather's brother. I had found the death records of the three Worthington's you listed, but hadn't found their obits. Again thank you. And keep it up, you never know who you may help:) Are any of these obit's being posted on a website? If not, they should be:) Heather
Hey Heather, I have been submitting the obituaries to www.scioto.org, to be posted in the Lawrence County section. There's really quite a collection there, and you can do it automatically. I've been going through some of the obituaries that I've pulled over the years and submitting them there when they weren't already online. The difference now is that I am sending them to the list as well. I love it! It's quite a collection! - Jean -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, October 03, 2005 10:38 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [OHLAWREN] OBIT'S Jean, Yes you have helped me:) John W. Heather, Thanks so much for taking the time to let me know about the Worthington obits. It's nice to know that someone has made the connection to some of the obituaries/articles that I've been posting! - Jean Thank you so much for these three obituaries, they are relatives of mine:) The husband and wife were John W. Worthington and Susan Ellis Weaver. They had the following children: Charles P., Theodore, John E, Nora A., Howell (Hoarace) G., and Eva Worthington. John W. Worthington was the son of Charles and Rachel Cartright Worthington. I descend from Charles son William Worthington. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart! Sincerely, Heather W. Bowers
Hi Folks, I hope this is appropriate for the list, but I am assisting in organizing the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, here in Gallipolis. The tent will cover a wide range of counties surrounding our area, including: Lawrence, Jackson, Meigs, Cabel, and of course Gallia. Ancestors do not have to be Ohioans for a direct descendant to qualify, though they must have served for the U.S.A. Pre-acceptance into a local Society of Civil War families is a plus, but is not a guarantee of acceptance; but it does mean that you have the hard part done :-) Anyone with an interest in joining, can contact me as I am one of the recruiters :-) [email protected] For more on the organization please see http://www.duvcw.org/ Thank you, Linda Trent [email protected]
