    3. Oops - Sorry Nancy, I made a typo on Virgie Workman's death date. The year is 1966/not 1996. Sorry about that. 3. Nancy - I checked the Lawrence Co Ohio Cemeteries cd I have and found the following Workman's in: Rome Twp Cemeteries - Rome/Proctorville Cemetery - Section #15: Workman, Lucrecie 1888-1971 Workman, Tim 1877-1956 Workman, Virgie 1882-1996 Workman, William H. 1889-1987 There are also Workman's in several other cemeteries, but I did not find a Jefferson Workman. If you think the Virgie Workman in the Rome/Proctorville Cemetery is the one you're searching, perhaps the 1996 death date will be of some help to you in locating an obit that would give more details. 1. [OHLAWREN] HANSON Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of James H. HANSON which was taken at the O. H. Spencer's Studio in Ironton, Ohio. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's with James likely in his 50's or 60's at the time it was taken. I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to its rightful place with his family. If you are a member of this HANSON Family, or if you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    2. freedbyluvv
    3. Hello list, please excuse the possible double postings, as I am sending this to several lists. A woman named Lori on an Ohio list requested a look up, I responded, it came back undeliverable. She said to specifically send her reply private as it was a sensitive issue involved, so I don't want to post it on line out of respect. A few of you asked where to buy the book, so I put it on the lists, but I'm still offering look-ups if anyone needs one. Lori, I have your information. Let me know where to e-mail it when you get a moment. It is what you were looking for. April. --------------------------------- Be a better Globetrotter. Here are the two Turner listings: (John and Roscoe). pg. 91 HISTORICAL POINTS IN LAWRENCE COUNTY (Appeared in the Ironton Register July 6, 1876) "The first Methodist preacher who preached in the county was Rev. Shinn, of Baltimore Conference, at father Miller's at the mouth of Federal Creek. Miller, on the fly leaf of his Bible, got the names of all the members from Alexandria (Portsmouth) to Point Pleasant on both sides of the river and up Sandy, and sent their petition for a preacher. It took two years to get heard from.-----Joseph Barber, JOHN TURNER, and George Salliday, Sr. of Scioto Co., two families in Kentucky,.....were the members. JOHN TURNER clerk of Scioto County and Beryl Spurlock were made preachers." -------------------------------------------------------------- pg. 150 Col. W.C. Lambert " His interest in flying began in 1909, when he took his first airplane ride in Ironton. After World War 1, Col. Lambert purchased a war surplus Jenny (JN4) aircraft and began barnstorming around the country. He became acquainted with several fliers of that day, who were destined to become famous, such as ROSCOE TURNER, the great racing pilot, and Eddie Stinson, who designed and built the Stinson aircraft." ---end. 2. freedbyluvv
    3. Hello list, I have finally tracked down where I purchased the book by Wayne B. Ingles, Symmes Creek" he wrote in 1976. This book is not on their listed inventory, but I just phoned them, and a woman named Mary there confirmed that they still have quite a few copies left. This book has been out of print for many years. Someone used to see these books out at a farm somewhere in Gallia, but stopped doing so many years ago. Then, a sister-in-law of the author's widow found a box of 400 of them in a basement or attic somewhere a few months ago, and let the Gallia Co. Historical/Gen. Society have them to sell. http://www.zoomnet.net/~histsoc/pubs.html All contact information to that Society is at the link above. Cost is $10.00 shipping is $3.00 -------- total $13.00 Ohio residents add .68c for tax. --April. --------------------------------- Be a better Heartthrob. 3. Hi Vickie, sure, you're very welcome. I hope you find a connection. -------------------------------------------------------------- pg. 10 THE LAST BEAR Taken from the "History of Jackson County" by D.W. Williams. "The last bear killed in Jackson County was shot by William Whitt, at the head of Cub Run, in Jefferson Township in the winter of 1831. It had been discovered earlier in the day near Gallia Furnaces site by THE MASSIE BOYS who fired at it, but failed to bring it down. They persued it in the snow for several hours, but were disappointed at last, for towards the evening they came upon William Whitt in the act of hanging it up. Although he had killed it, they claimed it on the grounds that they had wounded it in the morning, a fact that was not clearly established. Whitt was alone and surrendered the bear to them, but sued them afterwards. The result of the lawsuit has not been ascertained, but THE MASSIEs ate the bear meat. The animal was young, and the run which it was killed has been known as Cub Run ever since." pg. 10 From the Old Ironton Register, 1882 WHICH BOB MASSIE?
