To Lunsford list and Jerry, & Charlotte and Robert, I also have Lunsford's of Cabell Co, WV and Lawrence Co, OH in my family tree. So, I am hoping that maybe one or the other of you may recognize one of my generations and we can work together to improve our knowledge of our Lunsford families. Here is my Lunsford lineage in as much detail as possible, I have marked anything that is NOT PROVEN as such so that it is acknowledged. I will begin at the closest generation to me and work back in time, there is no telling where we may intersect. I will post as much info, including other children as I have in my files. My GRANDMOTHER; Myrta Lunsford born Oct 1884 in Huntington, Cabell Co, WV, She was married to Charles F BIAS. Myrta's parents were; Gordon Lunsford born 3 Sep 1856 in WV or OH? He died Oct 1922 in Huntington, Cabell Co, WV, he was married to Cenna Clarona SHY. They lived in Huntington most of their lives, Gordon was the superintendent of Sunday School at the Fifth Street Baptist Church there in Huntington for years. The other children (besides Myrta) of Gordon & Clarona (SHY) LUNSFORD were; 1. Abigail "Abby" Lunsford, she never married 2. Alverdia "Verdie" Lunsford, she never married 3. Edward Gordon Lunsford, he died as a child 4. Ezra Morton "Zeke" Lunsford he married Katherine McIdahl, they ended up living in Calif. Parents of Gordon Lunsford; William Lunsford born 22 Nov 1831/33 in OH, KY, or OH? he died Oct 1915 in Lawrence Co, OH. He married Martha A. Morris born Nov 1842, she died Sep 1911 in Lawrence Co, OH. William and Martha were married in Wayne Co, WV and lived for a time in Cabell Co, WV, before settling in Lawrence Co, OH. The other children (besides Gordon Lunsford) were; 1. Percival Lunsford 1857-1939 he married Missouri Belle Bruce and they lived in Ironton, Lawrence Co, OH. 2. Sarah Lunsford born and died in 1860. 3. Mary E. Lunsford 1861-1924 she married Dock Miller, they lived in Ironton, Lawrence Co, OH 4. Elizabeth "Willie" Lunsford 1863-? She married Will Henry, that is about all I know about her family 5. Bertha Lunsford, 1865/66 - 1887, she married Charles F Towne, they are both buried in Woodland Cemetery in Ironton, Lawrence Co, OH 6. Isabella Lunsford 1867-1909, she married Thomas Johnson, they are buried in Woodland Cemetery in Ironton, OH 7. Martha Lunsford, 1871- ? she married a ? Hamlin, that is all I know about her family 8. Alice Lunsford 1875- ? she married Robert Cleary and they are buried in Woodland Cemetery in Ironton, OH 9. Minnie Lunsford 1877- ? no spouse info, nothing else for her 10. Cora Lunsford 1880- ? she married William Weyersmiller, hads daughter Ernestine Weyersmiller. 11. Nora Lunsford, 1884- ? she married John E Amour. The NEXT generation back the parents of William Lunsford and Martha Morris the following is ALL I have for them, >From their marriage record I know that William Lunsford's father was ALSO a WILLIAM Lunsford, (same info is on the death record for William in 1915) and on the marriage record is has for the mother of William only the letter "L" and on the death record for William in 1915 it has that his mother was Martha DAY..which is correct, I tend to accept the marriage license as William's brother, Andrew Lunsford on his marriage record it also states that his parents were Wm & "L" Lunsford..in the margin of that record someone has written "Lucinda as the mother's given name..but I have NO IDEA by whom or when this annotation was written) it is also conjectured that the mother of William and Andrew Lunsford may Martha Lucinda Day or Lucinda Martha Day...the only record for support of the Martha Day name is the death record of William. As the death record was filled out by a member of yet another generation, I tend to accept the marriage record as that info was supplied by 2 of her sons, and they SHOULD have known their own mother's given name. Maybe the name Martha Day was for a SECOND wife of their father, William Lunsford. Well that is All I can tell you for sure, except that William Lunsford SR (father of William and Andrew was born abt 1816 in maybe OH, based on census records of he and his sons) IF anyone out there recognizes any of these people, please contact me...THIS IS a MAJOR BRICK WALL for me...I would love to be in contact with other family of Lunsford..share photos, info and documents to assist all of us in rounding out our family. He was born in about 1825 and married Elizabeth. Their first five children (Zachariah, Ann, Luvenia, Jenna, and Samuel) were born in Virginia. The next seven, beginning in about 1861 (Reuben, George, David, Charles, Joseph, Mahala, and Robert) were born in Lawrence County between 1861 and 1875. Linda , I have one unnamed HIXON , in my genealogy , I can tell you that he was born mid 1940 s to 1950 s and he married Delores BLANKENSHIP , from Cabell County , WV. ----- Original Message ---- From: Linda Trent <lindatrent@zoomnet.net> To: ohlawren@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, January 2, 2008 10:53:43 PM Subject: Re: [OHLAWREN] My genealogical puzzle. Looking for Bessie M. Hixon's birthplace A cousin just sent me a copy of the Portsmouth Times Sept. 20, 1902 that has a social article about my gg grandmother (and grandfather, I presume) living in Portsmouth. "Mrs. Delilah Rice of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is in the city, the guest of her niece, Mrs. Charles Rice..." This has me back on my mission. A mission I've been on for nearly 25 years. I want to prove one way or another my theory that my grandmother was NOT born in Clark County as her marriage record states. It is my belief that she was born in either Lawrence or Scioto, with Scioto being my favorite choice. Here's my puzzle. Bessie Mae Hixon was the minor daughter of William O. Hixon and Ella Rice (Wm was required to sign the marriage certificate). She was born May 16, 1901, and married Walton S. Tope on Apr. 16, 1919 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio. I know for a fact she was married in Springfield, but where was she born? Her marriage record states Springfield Twp., Clark County, Ohio, but there is no birth record for Bessie in Clark County. It gets more interesting. Bessie's parents show up in the 1900 census, which was enumerated on June 18, 1900, in Bloom Twp., Scioto county, as the Hickson family. Bessie is born May 16, 1901 and then her mother died in Waterloo, Symmes Twp., Lawrence County Oct. 12, 1902. There's hardly time in there to get up to Springfield (just north of I-70) to have Bessie, and then get back to Lawrence County. I've checked the Lawrence County records and couldn't find a birth record for Bessie, but I've not checked the Scioto County records. So, by now I'm sure you're wondering why would she assume Clark County? Good question. When Bessie's mother died, her father didn't think he could raise a young lady, so he sent her to Springfield to live with her Aunt and Uncle Hattie Hixon and William Wright. Since Bessie was old enough to remember she always lived in Springfield. Her father remarried shortly thereafter, this time to Gerilda Brown, d/o Nathaniel and Martha Murray Brown (according to "So This Is Waterloo"). By 1920 they are living in Springfield, Ward 2, Clark County, Ohio the same with 1930. William died in 1939 in Ironton, Lawrence County. Did he send Bessie to her aunt at such an early age that he forgot that she was really born in southern Ohio? Did the family really go to Clark County where she was born and scurry back to Lawrence within a year. Did they just go up to visit and Bessie was born while they were traveling (thus no birth record because they didn't stay anywhere long enough). But on the other hand, travel was much more difficult especially for pregnant women, and newborn infants, would they travel knowing that her due date is nigh at hand? Was the sister a midwife, and if so wouldn't she come home to Gallia/Lawrence to deliver her sister-in-law's baby instead of having her sister-in-law travel to her? Ah, a true genealogist's puzzle. :-) If anyone can help, give leads, or anything else, please let me know. This has been bothering me for a lot of years and I'd love to finally put this to rest. If I can't find anything I'll just have to agree with the marriage record regardless how little sense it makes to me. Is there a list available for the vets honored in past years? Happy New Year Vickie Lawcoloreman@aol.com wrote: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to each of you. If for any reason you do not choose to celebrate Christmas, Happy Holidays. I hope 2007 has been a successful year, with some progress on your genealogy research, and possibly a brick wall or two knocked down. This list has been very quiet most of the year, with most of the traffic being the gatewayed messages for the Message board. Since so many of those are short answers to questions that weren't repeated, or thank yous to someone, I have been tempted to shut down the gateway. Another problem with the gateway is that (at least on AOL) the address of the person who posted the message isn't available, so the only way to respond is by going to the Message Board web page and posting a response there. I do know that once in a great while an interesting and possible useful item comes thru the gateway, so I am asking for a responce from you list members. Do you want to continue to get the gatewayed messages, or should I shut it down? If you want the list to be more helpful, try posting info or a query about a family line occasionally. If everyone on the list posted every month or two, we all would learn more about the families who have lived in Lawrence Co. As part of the Lawrence County Genealogical Societies preparations for the 2008 Ironton Memorial Day Parade, I am asking for info on any Lawrence County ancestors who served in WWI, and especially on any who died while in service. In past years we have honored Revolumtionary War Vets, War of 1812 vets, Civil War Vets, and Spanish American War Vets. We also celebrated some of the earliest churches. If you have never come to Ironton to for the annual parade, 2008 would be a good. I think this will be the 140th year. The parade goes on, rain or shine, taking between 1.5 and 2 hours to pass.
