Dear Greg, According to the 1840 Landowner Map Index (available from Lake County Genealogical Society) a John Sherwood owned 61 acres in Perry Township next to Madison Township. It was adjacent to Ambrose Robbins and John Young. It was on a nice road, South Ridge, now State Route 84, which connected to what is now Davis Road which goes to Call Road and the Amherst Call property about 2 miles from home. Seems a likely relative. Best research time at Morley library is in the morning 6 days a week when the genealogy librarian is in the room. She is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. An excellent way to start is with the obituaries. They are indexed on cards, and hopefully soon on-line, in the genealogy room at Morley. They index the newspapers which are on microfilm downstairs. It is early for good info, but you never know. Check the genealogy file, the surname file, the genealogy books, the cemetery inscriptions book, and several of the specialty books on Western Reserve and Lake County. The Lake County Historical Society is also a reasonable source if you do not find anything elsewhere. They have a good surname file as well. Since Lake County was part of Geauga County until 1840, the society has transcribed the land records indexes for Lake County townships from Geauga. Chardon, in Geauga County, of course has the estate and tax files, etc. prior to 1840. Lake county has some duplicate land records for late 1830s. There is also a Perry Historical Society which may be able to help you. The family may be in the Perry Cemetery at Middle Ridge and Center Street or the Lane Road Cemetery. The sexton is very helpful and records which are extant, are well kept and computerized. Could you tell us more about the County History CD ROM set? Morley has a good CD ROM collection, and I am always shopping! Hoping this was of general interest and helpful to you.
