You may recall that Sultan was the grandson of Sanford M. St. John and Lora Burnham. Lori From The Painesville Telegraph Lake County, Ohio Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1897, p. 3 SHERIFF'S OFFICE. Change in Administration at the Jail- Sheriff Barber Will become a Famer -The Office of Surveyor. There was a change in the office of Sheriff Monday and the jail has a new master. Sheriff Barber, after eight years of official life, first as marshall of Painesville and afterwards as sheriff of the county, retires from the public service and will devote his attention to agriculture. The sheriff owns the farm on the South Ridge in Madison, known as the Cullen Palmer place, about one mile west of Madison village, and this will be the scene of his efforts to become a first class farmer which, judging from his official career, he is sure to become. Sultan St. John, the successor of Sheriff Barber and a distant relative of his, was installed into office Monday morning. He filed his bond for $10,000 about a month ago and on Saturday the oath of office was administered to him. If he fills the office as acceptably as his immediate predecessor, there will be no cause for Republicans to regret that they chose him out of a rather large growth of tall timber that came up as candidates. Madison gains another ex-sheriff by the removal of Mr. Barber. There is a vacancy in the office of surveyor by reason of the change in the law which makes the term of office expire the first Monday in September instead of the first Monday in January. It is fortunate for the present incumbent, F. M. Barker, that he is his own sucessor and the only candidate against him who is clamoring for the office is himself. The vacancy was filled Monday.

    3. Yes, there are a few of us who are researching some of those Mormons who passed through the Western Reserve at that time, but not all of them seem to have stayed together. My ggg-grandmother, Effie Norwood [related to the Telford and Coltrin lines] left the group and her daughter married a fur trader who went to northern Michigan. Cheers, Bill Reque SF

    1. Researching LDS Kirtland to Salt Lake and inbetween
    2. Cindy MacSuibhne
    3. Hello to All, I have no problem locating records through the FHC in my area but what I meant was since the Mormons left Kirtland almost all at one time I thought maybe my relatives might have gone with someone else's relatives. My YOUNG/HARRIS family can be found in Pottawatamie County Iowa 1849/50. I obtained an 1850 marriage license through the Pottawatamie County library. Later Caroline YOUNG HARRIS who was married in Kirtland 1836 moved from Salt Lake City to Lewisville ID. BYU has a great site online for the cemetery surname listings in Lewisville. Caroline YOUNG niece of Brigham left Kirtland in 1856 with four children headed on their 2,000 mile journey to Salt Lake her husband Martin refused to go with her. She had to stop in May of 1856 in Iowa to have her baby Ida Mae Harris. She arrived at the Missouri River and finally joined Captain Haight's ox team in 1859. I was just curious how many from the Lake County line were researching LDS ancestors and if they had any Lake County stories to tell. Candace YOUNG EDDY of Lake County was left $25.00 in her father John YOUNG's will. Her sisters Caroline and Louisa were also left $25.00 but an additional $250.00 was to be given to them in seven years if they were driven from Salt Lake and their properties confiscated. This of course told me Candace YOUNG EDDY did not practice her family religion. Candace died in Lake County in 1916 and other then a short time on the trail (I think) she was a lifetime resident of Lake County. Have a nice day, Cindy --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. Cindy; Years ago I found that you can access personal Mormon records from the LDS by ordering them through the FHC. I could find nothing on my Williams family, and found a brother who had gone to Salt Lake. I sent for his papers and was able to get info on his ancestors. You might try that....get help from the volunteers at your FHC. Sandy McSpadden.

    1. Researching LDS from Kirtland through the trail
    2. Cindy MacSuibhne
    3. Hello to everyone, With Cynthia's posting of the new Obituaries and Life Sketches of Early Saints I'm wondering how many one this line are doing research from Lake County through to Salt Lake? I'm following John YOUNG Sr. who died in Quincey Ill. on the trail, his son John Jr and John Junior's daughters Candace and Caroline. Candace married John JEWELL in Painesville and I think left with her father John, husband and daughter Adeline JEWELL in 1847 bound for Nauvoo. I'm guessing since no record in Lake County can be found that she then married Mr. Dresser and returns to Lake County in 1853 with two daughters Adeline Jewell and Amanda Dresser. She then married Rolly Eddy. Her sister Caroline married Martin Harris one of the three witnesses to the Book of Mormon. Perhaps those researching Kirtland LDS can advice others on the availability of records in other states. Thanks, Cindy --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
