    3. An interesting subject---the scandal and failure It takes up 27 pages in A Banning Norton's book, "History of Knox County." So, it cannot be fully developed in an email. Basically a development meeting held in Dec 1814 A bill through the state legislature to charter took two years First meeting and Articles of Association held 10 Apr 1816. What they then did was print paper money. But paper money was illegal, except for the Govt, so the paper money was called notes, or "Owls" Well, it did not work out, and in 1826, a Luke Wapole got a judgement, because he could not collect his money in real US dollars from this of this Owl Creek paper. It wandered through the courts, years and years and years, 43 years to be exact. They owed money, and of course, some of the original directors died, some left, some new ones came on, and it had all been the rage to be a shareholder, and make money. In the court case, for Luke Wapole's judgement, about 1829, John Shrimplin was listed a minor owner, 20 shares. A special master was appointed by the court, and deemed the bills the bank owed came to $27,000 and change. Ouch! You would not have wanted to be a shareholder that day. However, no where in this history does it mention anyone comitted suicide over this. It instead says, the shareholders wanted to pay the debts, but only their share of the debts, and no more. Final settlement of the bills of the bank and the reciever's report was in 1859, and all the bills were paid. 43 years!!!!! Makes you wonder why they thought they could print money in the form of notes, promissory notes, that is, and make a go of it. Myorn
