Percival, a veteran of the craft, has retired from the Lancaster Gazette and Express, Ohio. He has for several years done good service in the Whig cause, as the editor of that paper. The paper has passed into Wright hands. The following extract is from Mr. Percival's valedictory; - "But we who are passing off the stage will leave these matters to others who have yet their part to play. Forty years ago last November, we first entered a printing office, and between that and this time, have witnessed many changes, and much that belongs to the history ofnewspaper enterprise. From the pens of strangers we often meet with interesting anecdotes and reminiscences of the past, yet none of them reach back to the time when the fingers that now guide the pen, set up the first stick full of matter for a newspaper, that was ever set in Onondaga County. That was in June 1806, and much beyond that period, out own experience does not extend. On other matters we could speak of earlier dates, but as we did not intend this for a history of the past, we will finish with olden times by saying, that when we first saw the little village of Utica, it contained one tavern and two stores! But now one of the greatest inland cities in the Union." ================= Newspaper articles from over the country can be found at: http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/
