    3. I have posted before but have had a change of e-mail address. It is now hannah1@salemnet.com I am still looking for my Gr. Grandfather's parents, which seem to be nowhere to be found. On the 1900 Federal Census someone turned in that they were born in Maryland, but as much as my cousins and I have searched, we come up empty when it comes to names. My Gr. Grandfather was Merriman Boramon Stevenson (M.B.S.) Hall, born in Knox County, Ohio Dec. 27, 1819. Married Mary Ann Ross in Knox County, Ohio in 1843. Had several children, two of which lived to adulthood. Mary Ann died young because M.B.S. after her death moved to Iowa where he married Alcinda Hedges, my Gr. Grandmother. She was the mother of my Grandfather Thomas Robert Hall, who had two siblings from dads' first marriage and one brother who lived to adulthood. His name was William. They ended up in Kansas; some going to Okla. and back to Kansas but their roots remained in Kansas and Okla. Anyone have a clue to this, please get in touch. Have found some wonderful cousins by Hall name on-line but never quite satisfied, so I keep looking. Glad to share info. I AM FROM OKLAHOMA NOW in MO, Barbara Bay Dewing

    3. Sounds like you need to do your basic research yourself. You need to order the microfilms of each year (that is available) census (but order the index first) Your local library can order these through inter-library loan or directly from the National Archives. There i s probably a small fee for postage. Copy both the entry for your family and the header of the page showing the State, Township/Town, page number & date. It is always advisable to note who the neighbors were...that is usually the families the children married into. After 1850 the census asked he name of each person who lived in the household. Sometime after 1850 it will also give the birthplace of each person THEN you need to order the Iowa State census for the time he was in Iowa...some of the Iowa state census asked WHERE YOUR PARENTS WERE MARRIED among much other informative information!!!!!! Send to the appropriate office in Iowa for a copy of his death certificate and order the newspaper of the area he lived in for the time frame of a week or so after his death to find his obituary and/or death notice. Send for a copy of the APPLICATION for the marriage license for his marriage in Iowa. Send for a copy of his will, and or estate from the county in which he died. This will give you more clues as to heirs and their locations. If you do these things....You should find the answers to your questions and a lot more questions! 3. And don't forget the LDS FHC, if there is one near you. Check the Library Catalog (online at http://www.familysearch.com or on CD at any FHC ) to see if there are probate records, marriage records, etc. for the areas you are searching in. Might be cheaper to rent the microfilm from the LDS ($3.50 or so for about 6 weeks) & make a copy from that (25 cents a copy at my local FHC) than to order the document from the State or County. The FHC would have the census records on microfilm too, but it's probably cheaper to do an ILL, as Carol suggested. The Internet is great for doing genealogy--I've made more progress in the last 5 years online than in the previous 20+, but sometimes you just have to search the actual records.
