    1. Re: [OHKnox] Crowell Portraits-Business in Mt. Vernon
    2. Jean, In the book OHIO PHOTOGRAPHERS 1839-1900 by Dianne VanSkiver Gagel there is this information about Fred S. Crowell: "Fred S. Crowell (1844-?) was born in Huron County. He was a salesman in a bookseller and stationer's shop and later worked for a jeweler. His first position as a photographer was at the Payne gallery in Mount Vernon, where he stayed for one year. He worked at Benham's studio in Norwalk, then at Week's gallery in Sandusky for about eighteen months, then in galleries in Cleveland and Erie, Pennsylvania. He owned a gallery in Fredricktown, 1866-69, then is listed in Mt. Vernon, 1869-1889." I bought the book in hopes that I would find information about a pair of Mount Vernon photographers that I would like to know about. It contained no information on the photographers I was looking for. I have a photo of either my gr grandfather, Isaac Parsons, or my 3 gr grandfather, Isaac Parsons, that has the following on the back, "Spurgeon & McClain, Photographers, Woodward Building, Mount Vernon, Ohio." Knowing when these photographers were in business would help me figure out which Isaac Parsons is in the photo. I know that the Woodward Building is being restored and that opened in about 1851. If anyone could help me I'd really appreciate it. Thanks, Janet Parsons
