    1. CALENDAR CHANGES: 1752,1582 +; Examples of different spellings and town name changes

    3. 1752 - 11 DAYS WERE REMOVED IN SEPTEMBER in any British Colony (USA, +) Births may have one date in September and the Civil records may have a date of 11 days difference. The GREGORIAN CALENDAR finally became official 230 years after it was created. 1582 - 10 DAYS WERE TAKEN AWAY FROM OCTOBER as the Catholic Pope Gregory XIII (the 13th) realigned Caesar's JULIAN Calendar made in year 45 which was off by 11 minutes. That 11 minutes each year made a big difference 1537 years later! Pope Gregory is the one for whom this 1582 GREGORIAN CALENDAR is named and it is still used today. Those of you who are genealogically past the above dates (Congratulations!!!) may wish to know the following: 525 A.D. The terms B.C and A. D. were devised by Dionysius (Dionysius Exiguus) with Jesus Christ being born "year 1"although HE may have been born what we would know today as year 4 B.C. The "Mormons" think HE was born April 4th, they are probably right as the sheep were in the fields in the month of April and the Dec. 25th date some of the world celebrate was actually a Pagan holiday. Christians began celebrating the same day as a way to avoid persecution from their enemies. 123-124 A. D.,yes, about the year 123 or 124, the Lunar calendar was adjusted to 365 days. It used to be about 354 days. 11 days difference was made by this change. 700 B.C. The Roman Calendar became 12 months long instead of 10. It is correct that often the Church birth date is many months before the Civil one is registered. Go by the Church one. The reasons for this are that the Civil one often was recorded only the next time the father of the family could get to the County Seat. EG.: in the state of Ohio USA the town called Millersburg is the County Seat of Holmes County. If a child was born in September in one of the distant small towns and that year had a particularily bad winter for many months then the birth might not be recorded until some of the roads were passable or the father was able to go which could possibly be as late as May the next year. The town clerks recorded it usually as the day it was reported and not the actual date. Also, be aware that many Catholic parishes had traveling priests who may record a "route" or visit of many parishes and not know how to spell the Surnames, in particular if it was foreign therefore, STARNER could end up STEINER, STERNER or STURNER; BUTZ could become BUTTS or BUTT; GUENTHER could become GINTER, GINTHER, GUNTER, GUNTHER or even GUINTHER or GONTER; KOENIG become KING; and something as the typical SCHMIDT could become SMITH or SMYTHE on the actual birth record (common); or the recorder just recorded all of the dates on his route as being the same day (rare.) Sometimes the exact same record for one child could have both Latin, German and French recording different parts on one record (not as translations but, actually as different sentences or parts of sentences on the record!) CALMOUNTIER the old French settlement and the mostly German settlements (Danville + + + ) occasionally had this happen in both the counties of KNOX and HOLMES. The town known as GLENMONT now was also known as BLACK CREEK and PICTORIA on different censuses, therefore, pay attention to the years as sometimes Censuses and records had different names
