The genealogy society offers two volumes of marriage records, I believe they are indexed by both groom & bride. Their address is: P.O. Box 1098, Mt. Vernon, Ohio 43050...tell them Carol sent you (grin)... I just published a new book available on marriages in Knox Co.: Knox Co. Marriage Records from Book 6 (1899-1903) Probate Court by R.DeLauder It has nearly 1200 marriages listed alphabetically by groom w/ a bride to groom index. I also have 2 clerk of court indexes, 2 will abstracts, 2 obituary and one funeral home record book...and more on the way. Jennifer, Yes, the Knox Co marriage book does list an index for the brides. This is what I found: Harriet Baltzell/Batzell m. William Berryhill 3 Apr 1834 by H. Hervey minister Mary Baltsell/Baltzell m. William Woods 10 Dec 1840 by James McLarnan JP Eliza Jane Babzell/Baltzell m. Charles A. Hallabaugh 23 Mar 1848 by John Boggs JP Martha Baltsell/Beltzell m. Charles Johnson 21 Feb 1863 by James Elliott JP There are 16 Wood brides listed and 7 Woods brides - too many for me to look up for you. Maybe there is someone who has more time to look up these 23 marriage for you or if you can get to a LDS Family History Center you can rent the Knox County, Ohio marriage film from Salt Lake City and search these marriages at your convenience. Film rental runs about $3.50 for a six week loan. Denise Crawford > Do the index books of marriages in Knox Co list the brides > alphabetically? Many Thanks to Pam and Kathy for the replies to my inquiry on John and Elizabeth Madden(m. John Madden). Yes, Pam your reply has convinced me Elizabeth Rightmire Madden is a sister to James JR. and Harrison Rightmire as well as Benjamin, William, John, Sarah (m. Moses Thopson) Jane (m. David Harrod) and Mahala (m. John Trott.) All children of James SR. and Elizabeth "Daugherty" Rightmire who moved to Knox County from Virginia about 1808 Their are now 7 descendents of this family who have met on the internet and are working to put together a family tree. Four descendents of Benjamin, One from John and two from Harrison. Love to hear from any other of the desendents who might like to join us. Alice
1850 Knox County census: Howard twp: John Madden, 34y, farmer, MD Elizabeth Madden, 43y, VA Lisander Madden, 13y, OH Benjamin Madden, 11y, OH John Madden, 6y, OH Mahala I. Thompson, 10y, OH The James Rightmire (43y, VA) family is listed just before the Madden family. The Harrison Rightmire (33y, OH) family is listed just after the Maddens. Are they are Elizabeth (Rightmire) Madden's brothers? There is no value of real estate for John Madden noted on the 1850 census. Could have been renting/leasing? Both Rightmire's apparently owned their property. According to an 1847 map of Howard twp, there was Rightmire/Critchfield property in the Southeastern corner of the twp. In 1871, Harrison Rightmire owned 100 acres in the same area. Just south of what is now State Rte 36 (Coshocton Rd), at the corner of Twp Hwys 225 and 224. There's a John M. Madden buried in MoundView Cem in MtVernon. But it give no dates. Apparentley buried beside a George L. Madden, s/o George & Eliza Madden, d. 23 Oct 1847, age 2y7m13d. Posted on: Knox Co. Oh Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Knox/421 Surname: Williams, Baker, Gearhart ------------------------- Hi: everyone: searching for information on: Chris Williams was son of Swain Williams he is in the Jersey Twp, Licking County, OHIO census in 1870. listed as 4 years old. It is possible He was born at Alexandria or Centerburg OHIO since he remembered both these towns and told stories about them. He was born on April 24, 1866. He left Ohio at the age of 17 moving to Elwood Indiana. Chris ended up living in Elwood Indiana for 45+ years, have letters written by his Daughter, Hazel Williams Baker 415 N 11 St. Elwood, Ind. (Married a C. H.(Claudons) Baker) C. H. Baker was a highway patrolman in Ohio even when He and Hazel lived in Elwood, Indiana in 1945. C. H. and Hazel eventually moved to Columbus, Ohio lived at 1581 E Arlington AVE. Columbus, OH in 1948. When they moved they took Chris Williams, Hazel's dad with them even tho he did not want to move. She says in a letter that he could not stay there by himself. So he must have been a widower at the time. She also mentions that they first moved to Sligo Ohio a small town 5 miles from Wilmington, OHIO. Her Husband C.H. (Claudons) worked in Wilmington, OHIO at the time with the Ohio State Hiway patrol. Then Claudons was promoted to the General Headquarters of the Ohio State Patrol in Columbus, so they moved again to Columbus. Taking Hazel's dad, Chris with them. Chris Williams was 82 years old April 24, 1948 one month after the letter refered to was mailed. 1870 Jersey Twp., Licking Co. Ohio census Williams, Swain O., 55, farmer, RE $5000, PP $600, b. Ohio (is this Frank?) Lizzie, 10, attending school, b. Ohio (Aunt Lizzie Ball in Kiowa KS? Have picture of Lizzie on farm in Kiowa KS, married Dan Ball. Hazel Williams Baker mentions a visit with Aunt Lizzie in 1936) Christofer, 4, b. Ohio (this is Chris born April 24, 1866) The letter referred to above was written to Arthur Redifer Gearhart, first cousin to Hazel Baker. Arthur was born Dec 18, 1873 in Licking Co. OHIO, he may have been born in Alexandria or Centerburg also. Hazel writes in her letter from Columbus Ohio that they now live about 18 miles from where Arthur was born. Would that be Licking Co? Arthur was the son of Charles Simon and Rosa E. Williams Gearhart. Rosa was a sister to Chris Williams. Knox Co. Census info: 1880 Hilliar Twp., Knox Co. OH, pg. 69B Geahart, C.S., 32, laborer, b. OH (Susie is nickname for Lura) Charles and Rosa Gearhart and their family, Arthur, Bertha, May, and Lura all moved to California by 1900-1910. Also Looking for info on Frank Williams, real name may have been Francis. Would have been son of Swain Williams of Jersey Twp., Licking Co. Ohio ,brother to Chris Williams according to information on the back of a picture of Frank and his family, Frank was the oldest brother to my Gr grand mother Rosilla (Rosa E.) Williams. but that is contrary to information in the census. Frank evidently moved to Dunlap, Montpelier area, the only evidence I have of that is the picture taken by Geo. B. Hawkins, Operator(studio operator) and the names of the towns of Dunlap and Montpelier, Ohio on the photo. I believe Francis or Frank may have been born about 1857. Montpelier is in Williams County. and it appears that Dunlap is in Hamilton County. Does anyone know this family or have information on any of them? I would appreciate your help. thank you. Alice, I looked at my Ohio Census Index for 1870 and no John or Elizabeth Madden appear in Knox County. This index covers only heads of household, plus males over 50 and females over 70.
