Hi, I sent and recieved the Civil War pension records for a William B. Shaw who died during the war. His father is John Shaw who married Charlotte in Lancaster co. Pennsylvania. I don't think that these are my Shaw's so would be willing to send the papers to someone who is a relative of this William. There is lots of information in these papers. Let me know. He is listed in the book, "Knox County Death Records; Book 2; 1884-1899". I am searching more information about him and his family. The book has him listed as being born in Washington Co., PA. In a book of births of Knox Co., a Baby Boy Cornwell was born 7-26-1867 to William H. & Mary Cornwell. Also listed in the Knox Co. Death Records is a Permelia Weaver (died 9-26-1890) was the wife of William Henry Cornwell's cousin, Harmon Weaver. Also is there any record of a David (Harmon's brother) & Charlotte Cornwell Weaver living in Knox Co.?
Thanks Debra for the info about the Sandusky contribution to the Mexican War. If you locate a roster I hope you will post the site. Rosanne
Jacob and Nancy FINK spent most of their lives in Knox County, Berlin Township. Nancy died March 19, 1887 at nearly 88 years of age. Jacob died shortly thereafter on April 23, 1888 at nearly 89 years of age. They are buried in Ankenytown at the Owl Creek Church of the Brethern. What I am looking for are their obituaries, if possible. Would someone know which paper they would have been listed in? Also, would someone who has access to the paper mind looking it up for me? Many thanks, Mike Bates
Levering is the former name of Waterford. Waterford is located in the northwest corner of Knox county, in Middlebury township. There are, or were, Baxter family living west of Waterford in the town of Pulaski, in Morrow county. Hi everyone, I've been out of the picture for a few days,Juno was messed up!!!! I finally found out where the SANDUSKY RANGERS came from.Believe it or not..... When the Mexican War began, WYANDOT Co. Oh. had been in existence but a few months, yet many more men offered their services as volunteers than could be acceped. Thus we learn, that during the last days of May, 1846,a body of volunteers known as the "Sandusky Rangers", and commanded by Captain John Caldwell, marched from Upper Sandusky to Cincinnati, Ohio. They were stationed at "Camp Washington," near that city, until the19th. of June following, when, for some well found reason, they were mustered out of service. Immediate after their discharge, several of the "Rangers" reenlisted in commands which were retained in service. At a war meeting, held in "Upper Sandusky" June 1, 1846, another company of volunteers was formed. It's officers were Andrew McElvain, captian; Moses H. Kirby, First Lieutenant; Christian Huber, Second Lieutenant; Thomas Officer, Ensign; and Purdy McElvain,First Sergeant. But this company also failed to be acceped for a term of service, and from that time all organized efforts to recruit volunteers at this point ceased. Subsequently, Captain John Caldwell was appointed Commissary of a regiment of Ohio volunteers, and proceeded to Mexico in August, 1846. In June, 1847, Lieut. H. Miller,Jr., and other Wyandot County volunteers retuned home from Mexico. This information came from the History of Wyandot County. I can't believe I found this group in a Alabama library!! I was getting some funny looks from people, as they over heard me talking about Union soldiers!!! So far I haven't found a whole lot on Wyandot. The census starts in 1850.My gr.gr grandfather had already moved to Knox Co. by that time. The search goes on............................................. Debbra V. Thanks Denise My guess Elizabeth was born between 1783 to 1795, so she probably would have married between 1815 to 1825. While you are checking also looking for a marriage for an Alexander Davis b. 1792 , so he would probably married around 1817 to 1827. Thanks for your help. Hi If someone has a will index for Knox Co, could you check to see if there are any Davis's listed. Maybe a George, Alexander,Michael, or Joseph Davis. Also looking for a early marriage record for an Elizabeth Davis spouse unknown. Thanks for any help Katherine
Katherine, I can do the marriage look-up for you but there are eight Eliza - Elizabeth Davis's listed - can you at least give me some kind of a time frame - it can be very broad... Hi all, I have a question regarding wills. I did find an ancestor listed in a will index (1849 in Knox County.) I wrote and received a 1 page will and thought that was it. I am now wondering if I should also check the probate cases, to see if there is more than just a will for him. I would assume there is. Am I correct? Cathy
THE HISTORY OF KNOX COUNTY, OH 1799-1862 by A. Banning Norton has been reprinted and will be available in February from Heritage Books. It is available at a prepublication price of $28.00 until the end of January. The catalog # is N 1563. Their phone # is 1-800-398-7709. Click here: Heritage Books, Inc. Janet
I think Kenyon College bookstore in Gambier has one 1876-1976. Not a lot of info on individuals. Norton's "1779-1862", printed in 1862, is informative. But Hill's printed in 1881 is best for early settlers, plenty of bio sketches, plus history of each township (including names of early settlers, justices of the peace, etc. in each). Also, "Past and Present" published in 1912. Quite a few bios of men from later times, mostly Masons. Norton's, Hill's and "Past and Present" are all available on Higginsons site. Also, available on microfilm through the LDS centers. They might have the film at the center in Mt Vernon. It's number 100032. All 3 books are on the same film. I was never able to find the books for sale in Mt Vernon, not even sure they have all of them at the library there. Also, I found a section on Knox County in Howe's 1851 "Historical Collections of Ohio" online. It names some early settlers. It was at: http://moa.umdl.umich.edu/ Hey, Carol Montrose, if you're reading this... how abt putting your 2 cents worth in? You know the area better than most of us. Pam
Is there any place in Mt. Vernon. That would sell any of the history of Knox County. ----- Original Message ----- From: Bill Oates <woates@ccis.com> To: <OHKNOX-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 03, 2001 6:31 PM Subject: Re: [OHKNOX] History of Knox County > There are some history books on Knox County at www.higginsonbooks.com > > > > > ==== OHKNOX Mailing List ==== > Listowner Email is 73777.25@compuserve.com or MaggieOhio@columbus.rr.com > > >
There are enough similar facts here to make me believe we have a common ancestor. My GGgrandmother was Olive Melton Simpson BLAIR. She was the widow of Samuel Simpson and married my GGgrandfather William H. BLAIR on November 5,1850. Olive's parents were John MELTON and Sarah INLOW. They were married on September 20, 1814. The information I have from another cousin is that Sarah was born in 1801 in Washington Co., Pennsylvania and died between March 23-25, 1870 in Jefferson Twp, Knox Co., Ohio. She is buried in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Danville, Knox Co., OH. Her father's name is given as Isaac Enlow. You may contact me directly if you wish. Robert M.
