Dave k CHAPTER XLIII. BUTLER TOWNSHIP. THIS township was created in March, 1825, and named after Richard Butler, Major-General of the U. S. A., killed by the Indians in the great battle between them and Gen. St. Clair, Nov 4. 1791 He was one of the bravest of the brave, and as he lay upon the ground helpless and bleeding from wounds received in the battle, the savages scalped and tomahawked him. We have been at considerable pains to find out the origin of the name, and were led for some time to believe that it was given in compliment to the sturdy old settlers, the Butlers, but have become satisfied from our investigation that the object Was to perpetuate with the names of Gens. Knox. Har-rison, Jackson, Pike, the fame of the ill-fated brave Richard Butler. The land is generally rough and broken, and the population has usually been smaller than in any other township. The location of the property was in Monongalia County Virginia and now is in Preston County West Virginia. I knew the Rightmire's had married in Monongalia in 1803 and then moved to Knox county around 1808. I always have suspected that they did not make the move alone so perhaps this is your Abraham Darling. This area is also very close to both Pennsylvania and Maryland. I didn't find any other mention of the Darling family, but I have only the pages that mentioned Rightmire and Daugherty. Hi Dave, Thank you. I don't know yet. I'll need to find out by looking in census records and/or looking for a newspaper which might give his children's names. I have an Ellen Thomas born 1845 and a younger brother Richard. Ellen names one of her sons George. So......I was hoping there might be a connection somewhere especially since Ellen married in Knox County and lived there as late as 1916. Her children George and James were born there as well although Christopher Columbus and Alice seem to have been born in Coshocton County. Thank you. I will get back with you further on this.
