It had been said that Stephen Delano was killed by Indians about the time the twins, Alvira & Almira Delano were born about 1817. Using Goggle I pulled this interesting article up: This must have happened in Franklin County, near Columbus. There is a marriage of Lavina Dillinoe & Jonathan Askins on 21 Oct 1819 in Knox county, Ohio. I have Jonathan Askins as living in Shelby Co, Illinois by 1830. Would this be your family? I have interest in the Askins & Harris families. You give your ancestor's name as Almira Delano Harris - was she the your Almira Delano who married a John Harris on 10 Nov 1835? Do you know which Harris family the John Harris was from? Thanks - Denise Crawford Inquisitor & Cincinnati Advertisor 14 July 1818 HORRID MURDERER! As Mr. Lewis Bland of Columbus, (says the Ohio Monitor of the 2d inst.) was seeking his horse in the Indian lands, on the Norton Road, leading from Delaware to Sandusky, at the crossing of the Little Scioto, on Wednesday the 24th inst he discovered a dead body in the water, lying face downward, less than twenty yards from the bridge; which, on examination, proved to be the body of Stephen Delano, Jr. son of Mr. Stephen Delano, of Clinton township, in this county, as was ascertained by his papers. His head on the right side was lacerated with a wound, which one of the spectators said had fractured his skull, and the eye on the left side was started from the socket; his throat was cut, although the gash had not affected the wind pipe. His clothes were found in the much the same state as when he was last seen. It is conjectured that this murder was perpetrated by the Indians, though not certain.Clinton township, in this county, as was ascertained by his papers. Walter L. Vance is buried in Mound View Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, OH, tombstone date of death 1909, age 62 years. He died shortly after the official certification of deaths was transferred from the counties to the State of Ohio. With luck, his death certificate was reported to the State. The Ohio Historical Society has the death certificates from Dec 1908 ff. on microfilm. You can contact them online and receive instructions how to order a copy of his death certificate (if one was filed). It took a year or two before all the counties got the hang of reporting the death within their boundaries. You can try the Knox County Health Department but don't hold your breath. I have often wondered if there was a register or record kept for people who served as Justice of the Peace. If so, would they be available to search? Were they limited to a small geographical area or could they perform services over county lines? Does anyone know? Thanks. Jeanne

1752 - 11 DAYS WERE REMOVED IN SEPTEMBER in any British Colony (USA, +) Births may have one date in September and the Civil records may have a date of 11 days difference. The GREGORIAN CALENDAR finally became official 230 years after it was created. 1582 - 10 DAYS WERE TAKEN AWAY FROM OCTOBER as the Catholic Pope Gregory XIII (the 13th) realigned Caesar's JULIAN Calendar made in year 45 which was off by 11 minutes. That 11 minutes each year made a big difference 1537 years later! Pope Gregory is the one for whom this 1582 GREGORIAN CALENDAR is named and it is still used today. Those of you who are genealogically past the above dates (Congratulations!!!) may wish to know the following: 525 A.D. The terms B.C and A. D. were devised by Dionysius (Dionysius Exiguus) with Jesus Christ being born "year 1"although HE may have been born what we would know today as year 4 B.C. The "Mormons" think HE was born April 4th, they are probably right as the sheep were in the fields in the month of April and the Dec. 25th date some of the world celebrate was actually a Pagan holiday. Christians began celebrating the same day as a way to avoid persecution from their enemies. 123-124 A. D.,yes, about the year 123 or 124, the Lunar calendar was adjusted to 365 days. It used to be about 354 days. 11 days difference was made by this change. 700 B.C. The Roman Calendar became 12 months long instead of 10. It is correct that often the Church birth date is many months before the Civil one is registered. Go by the Church one. The reasons for this are that the Civil one often was recorded only the next time the father of the family could get to the County Seat. EG.: in the state of Ohio USA the town called Millersburg is the County Seat of Holmes County. If a child was born in September in one of the distant small towns and that year had a particularily bad winter for many months then the birth might not be recorded until some of the roads were passable or the father was able to go which could possibly be as late as May the next year. The town clerks recorded it usually as the day it was reported and not the actual date. Also, be aware that many Catholic parishes had traveling priests who may record a "route" or visit of many parishes and not know how to spell the Surnames, in particular if it was foreign therefore, STARNER could end up STEINER, STERNER or STURNER; BUTZ could become BUTTS or BUTT; GUENTHER could become GINTER, GINTHER, GUNTER, GUNTHER or even GUINTHER or GONTER; KOENIG become KING; and something as the typical SCHMIDT could become SMITH or SMYTHE on the actual birth record (common); or the recorder just recorded all of the dates on his route as being the same day (rare.) Sometimes the exact same record for one child could have both Latin, German and French recording different parts on one record (not as translations but, actually as different sentences or parts of sentences on the record!) CALMOUNTIER the old French settlement and the mostly German settlements (Danville + + + ) occasionally had this happen in both the counties of KNOX and HOLMES. The town known as GLENMONT now was also known as BLACK CREEK and PICTORIA on different censuses, therefore, pay attention to the years as sometimes Censuses and records had different names
Sue, I understand, thanks anyway. Harve
Sue, Thank you. The Jenkins turned out to be the wrong one But almost all Elder's should be related. Helen
Would someone be able to check the county births for a boy child born to Nancy Pierce between 1835 and 1839. If not, were there any Pierce births in that time frame. Also the same time period for any McNamee child. Thank you so much. This would be at your convenience. Vicki
Sue, All the Burkholders and Vances are in my line one way or another. I know it is an imposition to get the info on so many, but I know I don't have all of them--just some, and looking at them all will me sort out the families. You could E-mail me directly after assembling the data, which I know may take some time. It would be greatly appreciated. Harve Wolfe [email protected]
Harve, I'm sorry but that would take more time than I have. Considering you're talking about over forty of them you might want to consider getting that book. If so why not check on this Knox county site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohknox/knox1a.htm Either that or maybe someone else with the book has the time needed.
