Law Library is open on Saturdays? I understand probate records prior to 1993 are housed there. I may have a chance to get to Mt. Vernon in March - but only on a Saturday. I am interested in finding probate records for Richard Deakins who died Knox Co. in the 1850s, with his son appointed administrator.
Thank you, Sue Cooperider and CPaprocki, for checking in the Knox County Marriage Records for my Fraziers. The Phenes/Thomas Frazier and Mary Jane Barton are definitely my Phenes (Phineas) Frazier and Mary Jane Buxton. I'm wondering if his name may have been Thomas Phenes Frazier. In his pension records, the name Phenes is used repeatedly, with one exception. The name "Thomas" was written, then crossed out and Phenes written in. In the "Birth Records of Knox County, Ohio 1867-1908" the child listed as Charles E., b. 10 Aug 1871 in Morris Twp, born to Phenis Frazier and Mary Button is, in fact, my grandfather. The date is correct, but his name should read Charles W. (Wesley) and his mother's name should read Mary Buxton. The child, Elmore Stewart Frazier, b 17 Jan 1875 in Clinton Twp. was grandpa's youngest brother. One stumbling block in finding Phenes' parents/siblings are the many spellings of both the first and last name. Thanks so much for your help. Shirley
Could someone please do a marriage lookup for me? Actually, it's 2 lookups. I've been told that on the same day, the same year, in the same township, by the same justice of the peace 2 couples are listed: Phineas Frazier/Mary Jane Buxton; Thomas Frazier/Mary Jane Barton. Some think that they are separate couples, with Phineas and Thomas being brothers; others think it was simply a misprint and they are actually both Phineas Frazier and Mary Jane Buxton. I'm interested in finding out what exactly is written in the marriage books on these people. Are they listed together in the book? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Shirley

Have you already checked land records in the counties that you know your Deakins family has lived in? Many of the older land records give genealogical information - especially when land is inherited by children. Many times this is the only way I have been able to extend my pedigree, especially when the time period is before the 1850 census and the start of birth records. For the past five years I have been searching for the parents of my Great-great Grandfather WILLIAM DEAKINS who married HESTER BAKER on 15 Mar 1846. In my records I found a LEATHA ANN DEAKINS who married WILLIAM SEVERNS ca. 1845. Leatha's parents were given as RICHARD and ANN DEAKINS of Brown Twp, Knox Co. I would be interested to find out if Leatha and William were brother and sister. This would mean I might have found a "missing link". William and Hester's daughter, SEVENA DEAKINS, was my Great-Grandmother who was also related to the BUTLERS of Knox Co. One of the Butlers , Joseph married an ABIGAIL SEVERNS. Sevena's father, William, died 26 Apr 1868 and is buried in the Severns family cemetery on Praler Mill Rd. I found it several years ago but it is in ruins. You would not know it is a cemetery unless you were standing on top of it. Most of the stones are down and grown over, and the trees have taken over the grounds. What a shame.
