    3. SOURCE:SOURCE: "Marriage Records of Knox County, Ohio, 1808-1875", published by the Knox County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, 1995. Compiled by Richard DeLauder, Mount Vernon, OH. Indexed by Franklin Miller, Jr., Gambier, OH. "Any given marriage might be recorded in three different books at the County Court House. 1. The "White Books," large white-bound ledger books at the County Court House. 2. The "Red Books," a series of smaller red-bound books, used between 1808 and early 1861. 3. The 'certificates," loose forms filled out for many marriages and filed in packets roughly according to dates, from 1809 - 1875. These sources, for which certificates were found are indicated by a "-" sign following the page number or by the entry "cer-". For example, an entry 112- 265r at the right of the page indicates that this marriage is recorded on page 122 of a white book, on page 265 of a red book, and also is entered on a certificate." Marriage is found on page 5 of the Knox County publication. Husband: Hooker, Hanson Wife: Young, Susannah Married: 3 Feb 1820 By Whom: J. W. Pigman min (minister) 50- 114r (Marriage is recorded on page 50 in one of the White Books, page 114 in one of the Red Books; also entered on a certificate.) Marriage is found on page 43 of the Knox County publication. Husband: Young, Cornelius Wife: Dennis, Catharine Married: 16 Jan 1838 By Whom: R. C. Davis JP (Justice of the Peace) 420- 84r (Marriage is recorded on page 420 in one of the White Books, page 84 in one of the Red Books; also entered on a certificate.) My guess from looking at the pages covered, both of these entries would be found in the first White Book, although there is no label that calls it Volume I. Red Book entry for Susannah Young would be in the first red book and the entry for Cornelius would be in the third red book, neither with a volume label. It helps a great deal to be both creative and patient when working in the marriage records. Kudos to Dick DeLauder and Franklin Miller. Carole

    1. Michael Cline, Clay Twp., d. ca. 1865
    2. I may need some "on the ground" help in Knox Co. My hope is that Michael Cline, b. ca. 1789 in PA, recorded on census for Knox Co. in Clay Twp. in 1850 and 1860, died in the 1860s, and that his estate was probated with a list of heirs. I'm trying to confirm that Samuel Ferrell, newly married and living next to Michael Cline in 1860, was Michael's grandson by way of daughter Margaret Cline. Michael Cline was present in Belmont Co., OH, in 1840. Likewise was Reuben T. Ferrell, who wed Margaret Cline in 1836. Reuben remarried in 1842 to Nancy Grimes--I'm pretty sure that Margaret had died, rather than being divorce from Reuben. Living with them in the 1850 census for Belmont Co. was son Samuel Ferrell, listed as age 13 and the likely product of Reuben Ferrell's first marriage. Samuel Ferrell is not to be found in Belmont Co. in 1860 or thereafter. He is, though--as stated above--living next to a Michael Cline, old enough to be his grandfather, in the 1860 census for Clay Twp., Knox Co. To summarize: is there an estate file for Michael Cline of Clay Twp., Knox Co., who died between 1860 and 1870? Michael's son Samuel B. Cline was a close neighbor in that period, and is likely listed among the heirs. And hopefully, Samuel Ferrell, son of Margaret Cline Ferrell, will be among the others. David Fletcher Richmond, VA

There is a Pleasan A Sargent listed in the Ohio Historical Society online death certificate index, d. 2/25/1913. Could this be her? I appreciate any help. Cynthia

    3. One of my ancestors, Adonijah Reed, had 2 wives. Most of our family was only aware of the second one until legal records listed his wife at that time as "his second wife", doing this specifically in numerous land records. Since Adonijah was in Knox County for a short period of time, I'd very much appreciate a look-up in marriage records that would show Adonijah as the groom, but have no idea of who the bride might have been. Would imagine the marriage would have occurred between 1815 - 1825. I know this doesn't give much info to use, but is all I have. Thanks very much, Doris Reed Forsyth
