Dear Researchers of Jefferson County, Ohio, In response to the theme of the male given name "Marion": General Francis Marion, the famed "Swamp Fox" of the Revolutionary War, who successfully utilized guerilla tactics against the British, inspired the name "Francis Marion" or possibly shortened to simply "Marion" in at least some of the naming choices for sons born years after that conflict. The "Dictionary of First Names" by Alfred J. Kolatch states that Marion is a variant form of Marian or Marcus. Marian, actually derived from Mary, can be used for either a male or female. Marcus was created from the Latin name for Mars, the god of War. Randal W. Cooper <rwcooper@kellnet.com> Lorain, Ohio
