There is a Thesaurus of Geographic Names at: http://www.gii.getty.edu/tgn_browser It will locate small unknown towns all over the world and give you geographic coordinates on where to find it on a map. It also gives the hierarchy and I used it to find what counties some towns were in so I could research them.
