Jane, This may or may not be new info for you. I found two Chalfants in the 1871 Atlas of Jefferson Co. One is W. Chalfant in Main St. near Lindon in New Alexandria, Cross Creek Twp. The other is Mrs. M. E. Chalfant on Second St. near South St. in Tiltonville, Warren Twp.
