I am a new subscriber to this list, and I am researching the TORBET family. HUGH TORBET, my gr. uncle was born in Dalmellington,Scotland in 1859 His wife, ELIZABETH McMAHON was born in Ireland, also in 1859. They were married in 1883 in Jefferson Co., to the best of my knowledge. Hugh was a coal miner, and in the 1900 census his occupation was listed as a "weighmaster." They lived for many years in Dillonvale, Mt.Pleasant township. Their third child, GEORGE TORBET, was born in 1890 and died at the age of 17 (ca1907) in a mine accident. Their fourth child, DOUGLAS TORBET, was born in 1893 and died at 14 or 15 years (ca 1907 or 1908) of "natural causes." Hugh's younger sister, ELIZABETH TORBET immigrated from Dalmellington to the US in 1887, following the death of her mother. I believe she came to Jefferson Co. to join her brother and to marry THOMAS WILSON, her bethrothed and also a miner. I have a photograph of the couple taken at Plummer's (?) phototography in Weeeling, but my research indicates they were not married in Wheeling. They were married ca 1893. I need help in the form of lookups or addresses where to write to obtain the following: 1) Documentation for the marriage of HUGH TORBET and ELIZABETH McMAHON. (1883) 2) Documentation for the marriage of ELIZABETH TORBET and THOMAS WILSON.(1893) 3) Documentation for the deaths of GEORGE and DOUGLAS TORBET.
