Dear Members of the Jefferson County, Ohio Mailing List, Responding to questions which I've been asked regarding the list of steamboats that were built at Steubenville, Ohio, 1820 through 1854 [from the Lytle-Holdcamper List]: Unfortunately, Lytle's List does not include the names of the owners of the steamboats, nor does it name the captains or pilots of the vessels. Everything that is enumerated about each steam vessel was posted in my original message. And, to answer the question about "First Home Ports": Normally, the port nearest the residence of the steamboat owner, or where he carried on his business. There were exceptions to this, however. I was researching the steamboat "Boyle", which was built in 1849 at Rock Island, Illinois, and was said to have had Saint Louis, Missouri as her first home port. But, due to her small size [65-ton sternwheeler], she might have been registered in Saint Louis, but carried on a short trade only in the Rock Island area, according to a Saint Louis researcher.
