By Dr. Robert Schilling page 100,101,&102 Great Locomotive Chase One of the most daring and interesting episodes of the great Civil War, had as one of its character a Knox Twp. volunteer, William Pittenger. Eight lost their lives, and Pittenger for months was supposed to have be executed with them. By the efforts of Edward Stanton of this country these prisoners were exchanged March 1863. For a time, when Pittenger was thought to have been hung, it was wildly talked of holding memorial services for him in the New Somerset M.C. Church. Soon after the War, became a minister and preached on different occasion in this church.His book "Daring and Suffering" giving a complete history of this fight was read beside every fireplace in the North for the succeding 30 years I did not list all the details that are listed in this book, only that which pertains to Jeff.Co.
