Philip Carroll, a Revolutionary War Soldier, is probably buried in Jefferson County Ohio according to an item in a "Jefferson County Newsletter" recently found in a library in Ashtabula. My source has not yet sent me her photocopy of the actual item, but I am so curious to know that I wonder if any lister has any knowledge of this newsletter? My Philip Carroll of Jefferson County died during the War of 1812 at Fort Shelby, Detroit, of cholera, along with 700 other soldiers during the winter of 1813/1814. Could the same soldier have served in both wars? Eric Olson Seattle
Eric, YES! Your Philip Carroll could have served in both wars- we have found several soldiers who did just that! I am the editor of the Jefferson County Lines Newsletter and received the Patriot Ancestor list from a friend that is currently working on publishing a fourth volume of "Patriot Ancestors" books which include photo's, documentation, etc from the tri-state area including Jefferson County. I do have a contact person, but I don't have permission to list his name or email, so if anyone is interested, please contact me directly at: verstraten@prodigy.net While the Jefferson County Chapter, OGS is currently working on cleaning and reading tombstone inscriptions, we have decided to assist (in anyway!) the SAR in locating those "undocumented" soldiers and/or soldiers stones that are missing or can't be found or read. I will be happy to share this list of "Revolutionary War Soldiers Known or Believed to be buried in Jefferson County, Ohio" with anyone on this list. It is quite large and the complete list is included in the Jefferson County Lines Winter Newsletter. The newsletter lists 112 soldiers names as known or believed to have lived in Jefferson County upon their death. These suspects are found in wills, deeds, obits, and other documentation that leads us to believe they are buried here- not including the two just recently found listed below. We feel there are more as well to be found! If you or anyone else on this list has or suspects they have a patriot ancestor (Rev. War soldier), please contact me. I will be happy to post findings on this list when our research is completed. We have identified the following soldiers that WEREN'T on the Known or Believed list in the winter 2003 newsletter and we hope to continue to identify and locate more patriots as the project progresses. The following will be included as patriot soldiers buried in Jefferson County: Francis RILEY (Warren Twp) and Daniel HIGGINS (Wells Twp or Warren Twp). These newly found patriots of Jefferson County will be included in the Patriot Publication the SAR will be publishing in Jan of 2004. Contact information for the 4 publication information is: George Livingston, President geobev1@1st.net Or write: SAR, P.O. Box 743, St Clairsville, OH 43950 include specific comments or interests. If you are a member of the Jefferson County Chapter, OGS you have received the Winter 2003 newsletter, which is 28 pages and focuses on the military men of Jefferson County of which the Revolutionary Soldier list is posted. If you are interested in joining our chapter, you can go to our website at: www.jeffcochapter.com or write: JCC OGS, P.O. Box 4712, Steubenville, OH 43952. You can order "back issues" of our newsletter if you "aren't" a member by contacting me directly. If you are interested in joining our genealogy chapter, you can print and mail a membership application form from the web site- PLEASE include the surnames in which you are researching in Jefferson county along with your email address to be added to our email list for updates on events and projects currently underway in our county. I will list the following Patriot's for which we have ordered and received bronze markers for and plan to have them installed in the spring of 2004-when the winter weather breaks- at which time we will set up a patriot ceremony for them (hopefully during the late spring-early summer so those out of town can attend!). If you know anyone that would be interested in attending or any genealogy lists to put this information on, please feel free to forward it. I will post dates of ceremonies for patriot ancestors as soon as they are confirmed on this list! Annapolis Cemetery, Salem Twp, Jefferson County, OH Abraham Betz, 1783-1821 Ezekiel Cole, 1748-1834 John Davis, 1748-1822 Alexander Patterson, 1760-1834 (We will try to have these on the same date) Steubenville Union Cemetery, Steubenville Twp. (this is a replacement marker) Thomas Edgington Mt Tabor Cemetery, Island Creek Twp, Jefferson Co Abel Armstrong, 1758-1837 I hope that you consider joining the genealogy societies in which you are researching. The internet is great and so is technology- but- NOTHING can replace human contact in our research efforts! Getting involved is just one of many ways that we can share information and make connections!
