    3. Dear Members of the Jefferson County list, WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!!!! I would like to invite you to the Jefferson County Chapter, OGS Cemetery Extraction-Preservation Project Meeting Slated for this coming Tuesday, Oct 7th, 2003 from 7-9p.m. at the LDS Church on Powell's Lane, Wintersville, Ohio. This will be our third cemetery project meeting. Our goals with this project: To locate ALL cemeteries throughout the entire county, clean them, repair them and extract the tombstone inscriptions. This project is a MASSIVE undertaking and began Nov of 2002, but we involved aren't scared of hard work that has such wonderful end results! I can personally inform those on this list that if you have seen a Jefferson County Tombstone Inscription publication and your ancestor is NOT listed in it, that ancestor MAY STILL BE BURIED in Jefferson County. We have found MANY tombstones that have never been recorded, including small remote farm and family burials that have NEVER been recorded not to mention all the tombstones that are long gone from our view! If you live within driving range of this meeting and are the least bit interested in your ancestors burial grounds or assisting with the clean up portion of the project, or tombstone extraction, or can do data entries onto an already formatted spreadsheet, PLEASE ATTEND THIS MEETING. IF you are still interested and can't attend, please feel free to contact me directly. Flora at verstraten@prodigy.net I am interested in gathering hostorical information about all cemeteries, pioneer families, and pioneer churches where no apparent records exist. If you are researching Jefferson County, Ohio and aren't a member of the JCC OGS, go see what you are missing at the chapter website, www.jeffcochapter.com You can print membership forms, First and Pioneer Family forms from the web site as well. When you join, you will recieve ALL back issues of the newsletters for that year! Our quarterly newsletter will keep our members informed of the progress of this cemeteryproject , our wonderful finds as well as our disheartening finds. We will give updates as to when we will be ready to publish our first of several tombstone inscription books. When all of the townships are completed and all of the volumes are complete, we will have a COMPLETE MASTER SURNAME INDEX, histories of churches and cemeteries with some photo's included! Check with our local newspaper, The Herald Star in Sunday's (Oct 5th, 2003) Issue, under the title of Editorial's for my remarks concerning the "The State of Jefferson County Cemeteries!" at: www.hsconnect.com (you may have to look around the web site to find it!) There was a rather large article in last Sunday's paper concerning the cemetery project as well. Hope to see you there! Flora VerStraten
