Here is the scoop on Hammondsville, Irondale, Wellsville, etc brick yards and clay pits I promised you. This is from a man who was born in Hammondsville around 1938 and has lived and worked in the area all his life. Janice ============ Dando`s [Hammondsville] sells brick occasionally, but doesn't make brick anymore. They are just selling the stock from when they did run. There was a clay mine on the Dando works. McLeans was in Cream City which was considered Irondale and it also had a clay mine with it. Salsebury above Irondale was another one ,they also had their own clay mine. The one just as you went in Wellsville was the Buckeye plant, it had it's own mine. And as you went out of Wellsville going to East Liverpool was the Champeon plant, it didn`t have it's own mine. There was one in Vanport, PA (right above Midland, PA). Then they had a clay mine right at the bottom of rt. 45 just out of Wellsville right up from the Dairy Queen. They started it in the early 1950s, but it is closed now. P.S. The mine that was in Hammondsville was suppose to run clear back in under Rt. 39 in back of Wellsville several miles.
