Or there is also a series of How Tos on line at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/ If you are searching for land deeds - you'll have to work with or at the courthouses in the county where your ancestors lived. I will warn you that these Ohio Valley people seem to cross that Ohio River regularly and leave their paper trail in 3 different states. (The Gen Web will provide you all the mailing addresses and phone numbers of these courthouses & libraries.) And there's nothing like visiting and researching on site, - but sometimes you will have do this by snail mail from your home. You should follow suggestions written in the how-to-book on letter writing for successful research by mail. This takes time - but well worth the effort. The hunt is great fun. Also make sure you obtain every census available while your ancestors were alive. These records will give provide you clues for your research - even provides information on renting or land ownership (a reminder to look for deeds) and perhaps an aged parent providing a new generation. Don't overlook the siblings and maternal lines. Make sure you collect information on them. These individuals often provide documents and connections when your direct-line paper trail ends.
