    3. Tom, Sorry for the delay in replying. I'm afraid I can't add much. In the index to 1871 atlas James Ewing is the only Ewing in Irondale. Only 2 other Ewings are listed for Jefferson Co., a W. Ewing in Smithfield Twp. and an M. Ewing in Wells Twp. The index only lists property owners so of course there could be others in the county at the time. Perhaps you could write to Sandy Day at the Schiappa Branch of the Jeff. Co. Library asking her to check for a James Ewing in the 1870 census in Irondale, or if there are other Ewings there. The cost for this service nominal.
