Hi! I am wondering if anyone knows how New Alexandria, Jefferson Co got it's name? Any references to that in any Jefferson Co history books? Many Thanks, Janet Currie
I have transcribed *Yellow Creek Stories* by Dr. Schilling, 1947. It is posted on my family web site at: http://www.garlock-elliott.org > Histories and Folklore > Yellow Creek Stories There was an attorney from the area who republished the *Yellow Creek Stories* and *Yellow Creek Tales* together in one volume. This was a couple of years ago. It was a limited edition and all of the copies were sold. I contacted him at the time and he was compiling a waiting list of people who would buy a copy before he reprinted. He was to let me know when he got enough people. It didn't look very hopeful as he only had a few names at that time. I have never heard from him. My email program crashed and I no longer have a record of the man's name. Several persons have inquired about the book. I do not have a copy; was merelynloaned one in the 1950's so I could copy some information. Does anyone know if a Jefferson Co. library has a copy? T. Grant Maple
Mt. Pleasant had many Quakers, and their Yearly Meeting was located there. It is still an impressive brick building that would hold upwards of 2000 Friends, when they met there once a year. I"ve placed a photo of it on my pictures webpage, where I warehouse some of my pictures..... http://www.angelfire.com/wv2/photographs/ The meeting at Mt. Pleasant was known as the Short Creek MM, and some of the original names were Updegraph, Wilson, Hollaway, Cadwallader, Wright, Wealdon, Chandler, Schooly, Roman, Wood, Ong, Lewis, Talbot and Fouke.....none of your names of interest are listed as founding names. I checked the records and, while there are Walkers in this, and other MMs in Ohio, I find nothing for a Joseph. Many who were members of this , and other Ohio MMs were Friends whose families had been originally from Chester Co, PA (Roman, Cadwallader, EVans, for example) and who emigrated southward in the 1700s, to Va and NC.....then, when slavery became both a moral dilemma and an economic problem, they again emigrated, this time to Ohio, a free state that didn't allow slavery. Thus, it's good to check some of these MMs, looking for Ohio members. Many were from the Hopewell MM, in Va..this is at Winchester, VA...and, from the Goose Creek MM, in Loudon Co, Va. There was also a migration from the Brush River MM in SC, and some from NC, too, although the name of the MM escapes me. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ward Walker" <wnkwalker@rogers.com> To: <OHJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 22, 2003 9:14 PM Subject: [OHJEFFER] WALKER/JOHNSON/ARTHUR in Mt. Dr. Robert Wilson Schilling authored "Tales of Yellow Creek:", Gold Seal Publications. Poland, Ohio. 1942. The book relates tales of early JeffersonCo., Ohio settlers in the 1800-1820 period. Note the "c" in the surname. In a private communication, Dr,. Schilling indicated the printer made some unauthorized changes in the text, so some individuals are incorrectly identified. T. Hello, I just joined the list. I am researching the family of Joseph T. WALKER, b. about 1842 in Ohio, d. 1919 in Mt. Pleasant. His wife was Maggie (JOHNSON) Walker, b. in Ohio. A daughter, Elizabeth, married someone with the surname ARTHUR. (My grandfather was a son, George A. Walker, b. 1874.) The 1880 census shows 5 Walker families in Mt. Pleasant township, all with connections to PA. I don't know what the population was, but does this not sound fairly likely that at least some of the other 4 families are related to mine somehow? Another question. The history of Jefferson County, on the web page for this list, says that Quakers settled in Mt. Pleasant. Are there any particular surnames associated with the Quakers in this area? Thanks. Ward Walker

I have Robert Wilson Shilling served in WW I, married Emma Boyd unknown date and location. They had two children by 1920; Robert B. and Helen Louise. Looking for info on Joseph Adams (1810- ) and wife Jane (abt 1814 - ). Kids William, Laurinda (?), Elizabeth, Mary, Hannah. When did Joseph and Jane marry? What was Jane's last name? Who were Joseph and Jane's parents? I know that Joseph and Jane moved their family to Davenport, Iowa. Joseph died there in 1876. Any help would be appreciated. Chris in Iowa
Hello, this is my first post to this list. I'm looking for additional information on my Wheaton and McGinnis ancestors. I'll outline what I have here. My Wheaton family started in Harrison County, OH (as far back as I've gotten) and moved to Steubenville. Jasper E. Wheaton married Catherine Bernadette McGinnis in Steubenville in 1909. Jasper had previously been married to Anna Adelia Custer in 1900, with one son, Paul Custer Wheaton. Jasper and Catherine had four sons: Ambrose Joseph, Gregory Michael (my grandfather), a living son and William Grief. Jasper's parents were James Wheaton and Martha Bradly, I know very little about them. Catherine's parents were Michael McGinnis and Mary Lyons. I also have very little on them, and what I do have is conflicting. I know Catherine had at least eight siblings (possibly 10): Elizabeth, Martha, Sabina/Sabrina, Anna, Harry, Frank, Edward and George. There may have been two additional sisters who became nuns and were known as Sister Inez and Sister Rosario. I believe Michael and Mary came from Ireland, though I do not know if they were Irish, Scots-Irish or what. Any help anyone can offer with this mess would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Thanks for adding this cemetery....it is such a lovely place and so well maintained. My Several times great grandparents, Joseph and Roseanne Smith, and their son Andrew, are buried there. You have incorrectly entered Roseanne's age, making it appear as if she would have been the wife of her son Andrew, rather than Joseph, and I thought you'd want to correct the error so that folks "looking for" Smiths won't make this incorrect assumption. Her 'address' is A'6 Her birth date was 12-28-1794 and she died 12-14-1863 making her 69 years old, rather than the 39 as you have listed. Thanks....... My brick wall is Harvey McMillen/in/an/ian, how ever you want to spell it, we have documents with it spelled many ways on the same document. The facts we have on Harvey: Born on Sept. 26, 1831 in Jefferson Co, OH according to his C.W. Pension records, in Carroll Co, OH according to his C.W enlistment papers. The next time we see Harvey, he is purchasing a military land warrant from Robert Sherrard on June 26, 1852 in Jefferson Co, OH. I haven't seen the paper yet, but was told that Robert Sherrard got the warrant from George Taylor who received it on 10/28/1851. He then took this warrant to IN where he purchased 80 acres in Martin Co. We have record of him selling half of it, but not the other half. He doesn't appear again until his marriage to Barbary Noland (daughter of John and Martha "Patsy" Noland) on Aug 20, 1859 in Barr Twp, Daviess Co, IN. That is where we find him in the 1860 census as well. He enlisted to serve in the C.W. at Washington, Daviess Co, IN on 10/17/1864 in the place of R.T. Beckett (believed to be Ruben T. Beckett). He mustered out at Louiseville, KY on July 24, 1865(approx). From there they went to Clay Co, IN (1870 census), Clark Co, IL (1880 census), Vigo Co, IN (1890 or 1892 directory listing), Vigo Co, IN (1900 census). Then Harvey died in Vigo Co, IN on November 25, 1907. He and Barbary had 4 or 6 children, 4 of which have been identified; Mary Ann, James Ruben, Martha "Maude", and John. Harvey was buried in Highland Lawn Cemetery in Vigo Co, IN. He was a member of the GAR. We do not know the names of his parents, or even exactly where he was born (which county). There has to be some information out there, but we haven't found it yet... Please help if possible. Jennifer in Oregon Surnames: Allgood, Barcus, Birchfield, Craft, Fox, Harding, Maillet, McMillin, Noland, Pace, Riley, Smith. Counties: Indiana; Clay, Daviess, Parke, Hancock, Martin, Rush, Vigo, Vermillion. Illinois; Clark. Pennsylvania; Beaver, Washington. Apparently these are the areas that they are most interested in at this time; http://www.smgf.org/index.jsp?id=6 "Currently, we are in need of volunteers with ancestry from the following areas:" Europe Pacific Islands Asia Wales Tonga Japan Norway Samoa China Switzerland Hawaii Korea Finland Tahiti Philippines Portugal Fiji Netherlands France However, even though I don't fit into any of these categories, I'm going to see if I can't take part anyway......but, I'm sure there are a lot of folks with Welsh ancestry around! This was just sent me by a gen. acquaintance, and I thought I'd pass it along for anyone who might be interested. I, personally, find it fascinating, and have emailed for a test kit, although I'm not sure I"ll be chosen (unless they want those of English ancestry), but I sure going to try! Hi everyone. I have been posting the last couple of years trying to find my great grandmother, Ada Jane (Sanderson) Beckwith/Sanderson who was born @ 1872 in Wintersville, Jefferson Co. OH, and was the daughter of Richard and Emily R. (Fisher) Sanderson. Richard was bn in England. Today I found Ada in the 1880 census living with her grandparents, William and Sarah Sanderson, in Steubenville, 4th ward. Also living with them was a son of William and Sarah, named William. I believe Ada's mother was deceased and her father was either somewhere else or deceased also. Ada eventually married my Gtgrandfather in 1890, and they had two sons and lived in Salineville, Columbiana co. OH. They were divorced and she next married Ross Manning, Sr. and had two children by him. She settled in East Liverpool. I would like to know if anyone has any information on this family. Any help would be appreciated. Warm regards, June L. Beckwith
